Announcing Povray Planets beta available for download now http://swarm.perlide.org/static/Povray_ ... _12_10.zipUpdate: some reports of broken zip behaviour uncovered some issues with the packaging process - these have now been fixed.
Some early screenshots
Oolite 1.74 or greater required as this OXP uses cube maps for all planet textures. These are provided at 256x1536 - higher resolution textures easily available if desired. This OXP attempts to be faithful to the procedural nature of Elite in that all textures are generated based on seed values (currently I use planet name as the seed).
There are three planet types in this release; gas giants (banded ,turbulent with storm eye ala jupiter), barren rocky, Continental (the traditional blue marble)
This OXP will attempt to play nicely with Famous Planets 2 and NOT clobber the textures of FP2 planets.
Have fun in your fully textured galaxy.

Hope you will ad more of that marvelous textures in the final release.
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by. (Douglas Adams, 1952 - 2001)
You have to try the impossible to achieve the possible. (Emil Sinclair, 1877 - 1962)
submersible, there is an issue: when extracting/unzipping the file, near the end of the process, it starts asking for passwords to unlock files, similar to what happened with Trident Down a while back. I'm on a windows XP OS.
Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.
I'm afraid I also had a problem extracting this. .zip downloaded to desktop and extracted to desktop. I got this command line output error message
error: cannot delete old /home/smivses/Desktop/Povray_Planets_v0.18_2011_12_10/Povray_Planets_v0.18_2011_12_10/Povray_Planets_v0.18.oxp/Textures

O/S Ubuntu Maverick.

Using 7Zip (my extractor program), I see there's both duplicate names for both Textures and Povray_Planets_v0.18.oxp -- 1 is the folder the other is a file.
License.txt and padre.yml are both 0-byte files.

Very strange - thanks for the report. I will investigate the packaging process and update. Sorry for the trouble.
Did some testing but are you really sure it is compatible with Famous Planets? If I install it the OXP still replaces the textures for the FP-planets. Both in the F7 screen and when you jump there.
On a positive note. I like the textures. But on my machines (PC and Mac) it doesn't seem compatible. Or did I download a wrong version?

I think in fact I have been working against the wrong version of FP. The Povray Planets startUp is sensitive to the presence of 'Famous Planets 2 Launch Script' which appears to be an older version.
Updating now for 2.5.1 - Perhaps a 0.2 release before Christmas.
Strange. I don't have Famous Planets, but this OXP not working for me. No signs of errors in the log. I'm in G5, if it helps, but I don't think it should matter.
