The game currently has only a couple ship states for when it's overheated:
alive and dead.
How about when it's very close to dead...
1.Cargo gets destroyed
2.Equipment can be damaged
3.Pilot (this means you!) gets cooked
Also a near-death cooking experience can decrease the value of the ship and make it need a maintenance overhaul much sooner.
When the whole ship's heated up into the red that lasers could even overheat faster. You shouldn't be fighting so close to a star -- both sides could end up losing!
Crispy or EXTRA-Crispy?

Re: Crispy or EXTRA-Crispy?
I thought the energy loss from overheating could already do this? Or at least certainly damage equipment.
Admittedly by the time you're in this state and your energy banks are draining like your first bottle of beer of an evening then you're probably in the prelude to a space-bar moment anyway.
