For post MNSR - scrollable short range chart.

Post by Capt. Murphy »

It might be a handy little feature to allow the short range chart to scroll around the current galaxy, i.e. if the cursor reaches the edge of the display rather than resetting to the current system, the screen would follow the cursor. I would imagine a fair amount of code for a minor feature, so not a priority. I may add it to my list of Oolitey things to try and do*.

given it's short range for a reason - ie. your jump limit - i'm not sure what the benefits of this would be?

I'd say convenience - in all good software there is more than one way to perform a given task (and in some really crappy software too...).

I like this idea, and it made me think....would a zoomable chart be even better? You start with the short-range chart as normal, but instead of F6 again for the galactic chart be able to zoom out of the short-range chart until you see the whole galaxy (long-range chart). You could zoom as much or little as you wanted, and can zoom back in again.

That is a matter of opinion, Id say all good software has one, simple, easy to understand way of performing a given task, and does not have unnecessary duplication.

On the other hand, I do think it is useful to have a scrollable short range chart, I have often wanted to see what is just out of reach to plan the next few jumps. I see the short range chart of a local map, and the long range chart like a world atlas .. used for different things.

yeah, i guess if you run bulk freight jobs or whatever you might need a slightly wider view.
maybe it could be like the scanner and use the "\" key - go from a 7LY diameter to say 12 in 1LY increments, or 15 in 2LY incs?

That's one of the reasons I wrote OOLiteInfo so I could have a zoomable chart view and info easily without flicking screens.

I have sometimes wished not so much for a scrollable* short range chart, but that I could set the center of the short range chart.
(I am afraid of possible scrolling "freezes" - taking ages to scroll and blocking the game until scrolling is finished.)

There is already this feature that when you search a system by name, that system is kind of "marked" so I can fast and easily focus onto that system again later (shift-arrowkey I think it is).

Now some key to make any marked system the new center of the short range chart would have been very handy.
if you run bulk freight jobs or whatever
Combine that with important high-TL equipment being shot to pieces ... :D
