Shader issues and GDB output

Hi,

I'm trying to pin down the cause of some recurrent shader errors I get from the asteroid-billboard model in YAH. These errors have been recorded with both official ATI drivers for my card and the unofficial Omega Drivers, and in both Shaders Full and Shaders Simple modes. They don't cause any ongoing issues in Simple Shader mode, but I think may be a factor in Oolite freezing on me in Shaders Full mode.

Anyway I've just tried running a debug build through gdb in Full Shaders, and spawned the offending billboards using the console. The game didn't freeze but on exiting normally I got what appears to be a relevant message from GDB. Does it help?

Well tried again and did get my freeze - last line in the log is the same shader error. But nothing useful from GDB. I reckon the problem is the ATI driver rather than Oolite. I'll try disabling the asteroid-billboard shipdata entry by giving it a nonsense role and see if I can play freeze free will Full Shaders.

Edit 2 add - nope still freezing and other visual shader errors although no log message. Failed experiment to try and overide ATI's restriction on using it's newer drivers on older cards, via manually extracting the the relevant driver files. Ah well back to Simple Shaders....

The first time it happened when i noticed I had two copies of griffs witch installed and removed one copy while continuing playing Oolite. I blamed this action for it. I tried to reproduce then but without success. And for some reason the crashlog was not saved.

This time I removed coyote's run while playing because I realised I was in galaxy 7 and did not need it and it just spammed my F7 key on docking. But that oxp has no shaders so I don't know if this was related, although both happened after removing an oxp during playing. The CTD came (like the first time) when entering a new system and new ships where created. When I read the log well, during the creation of a subEntity.

There were no error in the normal log.

Looking at the last lines in the crash log, I wonder if line 871 is correct.

When the data fails to load (because I removed the oxp) than it releases itself but at line 871 there still is a variable set. Is that correct? And could something similar not happen when the file does not load because of other hardware problems?

Didn't quite give up there. Went back to basics and tried with no OXP's other than Griff's all in one, antivirus and all non-essential background processes and services disabled. Played under full shaders - and it still freezes about 20-30 minutes into play. Oolite isn't at 100%CPU (I had thought it was before - obviously mistaken) - but is ticking over at 1-10%. Sysinternals Process Explorer suggests that Oolite is waiting for something back from the ATI OpenGL driver .dll and not getting it.

I've given up now - back to simple shaders.... :roll:
