Heat shields too effective?

Post by dajt »

Hi,

I grabbed the heat shields as I have never been able to successfully sunskim in Oolite, despite doing it regularly in the old C64 days.

But I think the shields may be too effective. It seems like all danger and finesse has been removed from the process with the shields. Or was I just doing it wrong to begin with?

My current technique is to fly straight at the equator of the star, get the fuel, turn around and hyperspace out. Would this work without the shields?
Regards,
David Taylor.

Depends on your ship, particularly its top-speed. Without extra shielding scooping fuel in a Python was extremely tricky. I may have to tweak the heat-shield's 'tog' value a little though.

The heat shield made it a lot easier and less time consuming to get rid of a trumble infestation though <g>

I could skim pretty well in my Python before the heat shields were "invented". I think it mostly depended on the type of sun (and having a little remaining fuel for injectors helps A LOT). Now I haven't had a bit of trouble. However, I don't really think this is really unbalancing. It's certainly less so than docking computers.

Shouldn’t the trumbles be protected by the heat shields, though? <weg>

Well, they are -- but Trumbles have a lower heat tolerance than humans. So long as the cabin temperature doesn't reach full scale deflection, humans are OK. Trumbles begin to...ahem...'expire' just short of full scale deflection.

I'm always glad that we haven't yet reached the point where smell can be created through a computer... ...I suppose you could force the PU to overheat... ...naw, silly idea... ..and it wouldn't smell right anyway...
Very funny, Scotty, now beam down my clothes...

I bet some cpu's are fairly furry (dust-coated)
So it could smell just right!

Having a real problem getting rid of unwanted trumbles - the heat shielding on my python class cruiser isn't letting me cook them. I sit in the sun and the temp goes slowly all the way up, gets to red, flashes, etc, and they arent the bit botehred. What am I doingw rong? I had no problem getting rid whilst in a cobra?

WARNING: SPOILER

The thing with trumbles is that it's not just about getting them too hot.
There is a specific "Goldilocks" heat at which they fry. You just have to find it. It varies from star to star.
You came in that? You're braver than I thought!

Shipyards - try anything above Level 10.

As for the right kind of star to cook Trumbles, same with the danger aspect of scooping - you can get fried when scooping certain stars even with the hs.
The act of talking b*ll*cks whilst waving one's arms about wildly is referred to as testiculation.

Haven't managed to get cooked sunskimming - ever.

I always thought that the idea was to cook the little bugge4s by raising the temp as high as possible until tehy start shaking and expire. So you are saying that tehre isa specific sweets pot per star that they die at? Since this latest infestation (bloody scooped cargo!), I have been to 4 different stars (large/smal), and at no point during the sunskim ahve the trumbles started doing the shake and jaw wobble thing I have previously associated with them dying - so havent been able to find a particular temp. Will give it another try.

Trie dit again - went close to the sun and got the temp right up to almost energy draining, and moved away to keep the temp as high as possible without blowing up. Eventually they died and I jumped away. Wierd - never had to do it that way before. Cheers for the advice - you live and learn.
