Consensus on base set of oxps
Hi all, been away from the game for quite a while and browsing and searching here wondered if there was a recommended set of base OXPs that refine the game in a fundamental way but which are known as stable and in general "a good thing".
It comes to mind that a texture set that covers all standard ships, some planet textures, a hud and sounds would be first ranking categories. I like to play the game fairly straight as its the only game I still have any affinity for - the only game I recall ever being completely immersed in was Elite. Now I'm older and still love the idea of tooling around in a cobra mk 3 I am mostly keen to get the best experience visually and performance wise without overdoing the customisation and/or deviating much from the straight game.
I have swept the main OXPs but would like to hear from anyone else who this resonates for

Hello stardotstar. There is so much variety to choose from today that it almost requires that you look at everything and make your own choices. To get you started here is a link to previous discussions and within that are links to more discussions and within those there are even more. Happy reading.

If you would like a recommendation, well, I have been told that the chupacabraHUD may be the first one that actually looks like a hud. Not exactly a ringing endorsement but...

Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.

Re: Consensus on base set of oxps
Thanks for the link and advice.
That is the HUD I am trying at the moment along with griff_shipset_all_in_1
I think the classic HUD or slightly refined modernised version thereof might be more my feel.
I'll look at some planet textures and have a read around tonight and settle on something.
Best

Try the latest version of the CB HUD, you will probably like that one. I know I do.stardotstar wrote:I think the classic HUD or slightly refined modernised version thereof might be more my feel.
There is also the classic tried and true MilHUD, you can't go wrong there either.
KW's generic HUD is a nice classic style switching hud and may be what you need.
It's all a matter of personal preference with so many great huds to choose from. Good luck!

Re: Consensus on base set of oxps
Classic (* rereads quickly post above to ascertain the exact implications of my comments on the aforementioned HUD :phew: ) Well done - and thank you.
I am stoked how [Oo]lite lives on with a strong community and an open source developer community and backbone. Two of my favorite things of all time in one space.
I will try a few more huds and keep reading around; but most importantly I have to wedge myself back in the cabin and cope with the interstellar lanes with my current shipset and rusty skills

Re: Consensus on base set of oxps
A lot is down to personal taste and preferred styles of play, but a core of recommended OXP's for me would have to include...
Eye Candy/Ambience.
Griff's all in 1.
Griff's rockhermit.
Either Z-Groovy's System Stations or PA Groove's Stations.
BGS - Background Set.
System Redux.
Activities/dockables/eyecandy/danger.
Pirate Coves.
Deep Space Pirates.
YAH.
Random Hits.
UPS-Courier.
Escort Contracts (cough).
Other than that it's a case of pick and choose of what equipment OXP's to add to the game, custom HUD, other OXP ships/stations, missions. Everything in the http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/OXP_List should work just fine.

Re: Consensus on base set of oxps
Thank you very much - I'm getting lost reading through them all - and behind my firewall I can't download from box.net - so its a matter of noting down what I like the look of and waiting till I get play time at home,...

Hej, welcome!
Maybe tell how powerful your computer is, are you running Oolite with shaders on or off ?
Even the weakest computers can handle Pods and Cargo_Wrecks_Teasers*, both make scooping things more interesting but do not touch game balance.
* that for whatever reason did not make it to the oxp list.

It was always on the old list. No idea either why it was not transferred to the new list. Its there now.snork wrote:* that for whatever reason did not make it to the oxp list.
UPS-Courier & DeepSpacePirates & others at the box and some older versions

Re: Consensus on base set of oxps
In my list I would include all these, minus the rock hermit. I would go for Z-Groovy's System Stations as that gives a consistent feel between stations. I'd possibly also include Traffic Control as well to give a new commander help with docking.Capt. I would like to see the my list included with the main Oolite download, so that would show the base game of Oolite with the prettiest graphics, all-in-one for a new player.
edit: i would also add: default_Jameson_ship_is_griff_cobra3.oxp

Re: Consensus on base set of oxps
Well, for what it's worth I'm seriously thinking about starting a new Commander and keeping things as 'basic' as I can in terms of OXPs.
Smivs'Shipset, Accessories and System Redux, just to 'pretty-fy' all the original 'core' objects.

Some others of mine may be useful for the new commander, in addition to Traffic Control and Pods. See my wiki page for more suggestions, via the links below.

Re: Consensus on base set of oxps
Thanks all; in fact super extra thanks for "add: default_Jameson_ship_is_griff_cobra3.oxp" as I was just having a look around for that hint this very moment...
I have played the game for some time (not counting Elite Apple ][ era when I got the dose) - I contributed in an infinitesimally small way (but with tremendous pride) with the draw your own galaxy contest some years ago; I used to play on linux and only just taken it back up on my 13" MacBook... Being slightly advanced into the game with my saved commander dragged over from the home directory backup of my Gentoo Linux host I find myself too rusty to fight anyone or ...press space commander... time. But I can dock at full noise and get around ok - just can't fight worth ****.
I really like the idea of the core game - "prettied" up as much as possible without deviating from the core.
My OXP list is currently:
With respect to the grunt needed I think it is pushing the machine a bit - I notice some times when the graphics chunk a bit or there is a slight delay in screen switching (function screens).
My machine is this:
Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz with 4GB 1067MHz DDR3 and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M w/ 256MB
Not sure if that gives anyone any additional opinions?
I will definitely look at the ones mentioned above - thank you all! Its really fun being back in the Ooniverse - not that I can see that I'll have the time I wish I did to really immerse myself again its still got that authentic thrill - something hypnotic about the playability, pace and grandeur mixed.

Re: Consensus on base set of oxps
Sorry to be a bit slow on the uptake but I am having trouble understanding how to make the default player CobraIII the Griff ship - I found in this thread:
https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.php?f= ... start=1155
Reference to the multidecal_cobraIII_player.oxp and installed that - did a shift restart to clear the cache but the intro ship is still flat surfaces and having seen the reference to :
add: default_Jameson_ship_is_griff_cobra3.oxp
I found some references to making a small oxp to do this but am stumped (well probably partly because I am trying to do this while "working" LOL)
Can anyone point me to the how-to or give a quick brief on best practice to achieve this - I see that I can edit the plist for the default game and am more than happy to do this kind of thing but so far have not dug very deep into how the mechanics of all this work...
Thanks all,
