What OS do you run Oolite on? [POLL]

Post by JazHaz »

As there are a whole lot of new players on this here bulletin board, I thought it would be interesting to see what the breakdown of OSes is.

If you use multiple platforms (for example on different partitions), then just vote for the one that you run Oolite on most of the time.

I run on both. For some reason I find it running more slow on Mac Lion than on my Win-computer.

Running Oolite on two different Win 7 computers, one with release (1.75.3) and one with trunk. One is 32bit Win7 and the other is 64 bit Win7. I also have a Ubuntu partition on one of them with Oolite installed, but I only use that to test and play around. (Not very often). I have also tried out Oolite on Virtual machines, but that was probably a bit optimistic. (It did start though, but frame rate dropped to about 0.5 fps as soon as something started to happen. Maybe I should do that again, as VMWare work station 8 is supposed to have better 3D graphics performance.

Why can I only select one? I have a Commander on a stick which I move between my work Win7 laptop and my Ubuntu home desktop (well theoretically - haven't played for ages)

Which do you use the most for Oolite purposes, not just playing, writing fiction, OXP writing etc?

Either Ubuntu or Lubuntu, depending on which I decide to boot into.

Yay! Another poll which gives me the supreme joy of being the only person to click Other.

I run Oolite on FreeBSD, IRIX and Windows 7. Although I only really spend any time playing on my FreeBSD workstation, because it's better than doing my actual job.

Ah, but is that not based on Unix, and therefore should come under Linux, as Linux is based on Unix?

Or have you built Oolite from source and not used the Linux package?

That's a different question to the one originally posed - but one I'd have to answer "Windows" to - since using the work laptop is more convenient for the other stuff (until I finally get my Netbook - then I can separate work and play)

What?!?! I've killed for less and I'll damn sure do it again! :P

Linux isn't based on UNIX. It just behaves like it. It derives no source or direct development from UNIX, in fact there have been very high profile patent case victories in recent years that have hinged on that very fact. IRIX is System V UNIX with BSD Extensions. FreeBSD is derived from BSD, the version of UNIX® developed at the University of California, Berkeley. Both IRIX and FreeBSD are complete operating systems where as Linux is a kernel. It just so happen that it's commonly paired with the GNU user land.

I certainly don't use Linux packages on either operating system, they are both built from source. It's the only way to fly.
