Oolite Paper Models

Post by Selezen »

I got the bug this week to do some paper models after all that talk about Elite origami and so on.

Today at lunchtime I drew up an Oolite Adder to cut out and build. Feel free to download and have a go. Let me know how it goes, since I haven't test built it yet.

Someone made a bunch of Frontier paper models : http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/ecp/frontier.htm

The file link is broken, but can be accessed directly from here: http://androidarts.com/elite/all_ton_scale_v3.svg

I had built the Adder from his collection and it worked out ok. Will be interesting to compare the build with yours. With all those little tabs he's got it's possible to make it without any glue. Fiddly though.
The glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

As requested, build pics:

It went together very easily and is a solid little model. I'm quite pleased with it, actually. My only concern would be that inexperienced modellers might find the side sections (the sloped panels) a bit fiddly to glue.

I'd suggest glueing the inner tabs on the nose section (the only tabs that aren't numbered) first, :-)

I create paper models using the "Unfolding" option in Wings3D's UV Mapping section. It's maybe not the most efficient way to do it but I've been doing it so long it's almost second nature! From a quick glance at the Blender tutorial it looks roughly the same sort of idea and about the same level of complexity.

Great job Selezen! :D That's pretty cool. 8)
Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.

Thanks.

Anaconda is now ready for you too.

I've created a dedicated page for the models now (yes, it's basic but it'll grow over time, and with all the build pictures you will all post here it'll have loads of pictures on it!).

That's brilliant! 8) I haven't made paper folded models for years... - got to get me some heavy paper or light card - kids are off for the holidays next week... :)

DO IT!!! :-)

I know I've jumped the gun a bit (alphabetically) with this, but the Cobra Mk III is all but done. The building "hints" aren't done yet, but anyone who knows what a Cobra looks like should be able to build this one. Even the layout on the page makes it fairly obvious.

Enjoy!

NOTE: I should mention that the models aren't to scale with each other, although a future model set will be done in this way.

aren't valley folds where you'd fold DOWN on the crease to create a \/ shape? shouldn't you mountain fold those prints so the texture's wrapped around the outside?

<considers>

&$£*%*@!

Bloody hell. And to think when I did the Adder I sat and worked all that out...

Amendment will be made in about 10 mins....

EDIT: amended - and I've finished the Cobra Mk III. I made a slightly better texture for it, as I wasn't happy with the "shaded" version I made whilst trying to copy Giles' shading pattern. I'll be changing the Adder and Anaconda textures in a similar way.

This is fun!

Asp and Boa models now complete and ready for download!

Adder, Anaconda and Cobra 3 now use vector textures instead of the original bitmaps, and use flat colours rather than the gradient filled rubbish I used originally. They look better.

Enjoy.

The web page now has all ships listed and has a status indicator next to ones that are being worked on.

Apologies for double posting.

Another profitable lunchtime and the Cobra Mk I is now complete.

Note that this hasn't been build tested and there may be some misalignment of the orange stripes. I've checked the placement as much as I can and I think it's just about spot on, but only a build will tell.
