Clean on SFS but multiple disparate forum memberships, (and a verry spammy name!)

Thanks, I have been wanting to use this one for a while now but wasn't proficient with GIMP to enough to edit it properly. But I finaly got one I am really happy with. But if anyone can see room for improvement I am all ears.

Following some discussion regarding the occasional, and inevitable, tagging of genuine new members as potential spammers – no fault, no foul; we've all done it, and I don't think any innocent has ever been booted out after scrutiny – I'd like to propose the following (thanks to El Viejo and Gimi for the ideas):

If the new member checks out, DH or myself can edit the post where they're tagged to delete the user name but preserve the link to the profile, e.g. something like:
This will – I hope – prevent repeat tagging, so new and innocent members don't turn up to find katanas hovering around their throats, and a swarm of laser dots dancing across their sternums ...

If and when the new member makes a post, and confirms their bona fides for all to see, the tagging post can be quietly deleted.

Does this make sense? Does it sound like a good/workable idea?

I agree.
This is a problem that is bound to occur from time to time, and this will avoid any embarrassment.
One other thing discussed was the rare problem of a 'smart' spammer registering and making an innocent first post, only to follow it up with the spam hit on the second post. For example a new member with a 'spammy' name might post something like 'I agree' or 'That happened to me' with no further comments.
What I would therefore suggest is that any suspiciously bland first posts are noted and that the poster is monitored a bit longer, just in case.

I think this will work quit well. We seem to be good at identifying spam but on occasion due to all the cool names being taken an unusual one can appear to have a slight look of a bot.

It's got my vote. (I have had two deleted already  )

Seems like a good way to do it, and may I suggest that the assassins quietly send of a PM to Disembodied and/or DaddyHoggy if they find previously tagged users that are genuine and where the tag needs to be quietly deleted.

Why not have accounts time-out after (for example) 14 or 30 days and auto-delete unless they log-in and make a post? That way "questionable" accounts will expire anyway and keep things uncluttered, new users get the benefit of the doubt and there's no need for vigilant watching of every new user who creates an account.

Of course any account which posts spam, or indeed has proven spam intent (sig links to dodgy sites for example) falls to the Katana but its innocent until proven guilty.

That combined with the first-post approval is the technique we use elsewhere on a somewhat larger site than this one, and it works well. The time-out I think is a phpBB hack, but I may be wrong there (it could be built-in functionality of 3.x).

One small problem... some people join purely to make regular browsing of the forum easier, and sometimes have no intention of ever posting.
I'm not sure if I like the idea of forcing a new member to post within a set time-limit... hmm.

We got around that by having a thread where people could just introduce themselves and say hello. It works quite well, and there are a few who just post there and never again.

Plus it's quite nice to say hello to people ;)

The other alternative is to have accounts that don't log-in within 14 or 30 days time-out. That deals with "signature-spammers" who just use their profile details to spam.

That'd be cool, I suppose... our 'prime directive' should be the 'ease' of genuine new members.
