Overcoming writers block?

Post by maaarcooose »

So how do you do it?

I often convince myself that everything I'm writing is pointless and probably boring to others. Then I stop writing, then when I try to get going again, I have no idea where to go.

This week I overcame it in a strange way.
I was looking through the galaxy PDF's, wishing I had some sort of clickable info app of the galaxies, so I started writing one.

Then I started writing again.

Early days yet, but it does what I want it too. Will release it later as a bit of a research tool.

So my tip for overcoming writers block. Do some programming.

I hit the 'lanes and go for some deep immersion... long, cross-chart cruises without saving along the way.
It usually works, and often presents some new ideas.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Never really happened to me, I'll admit. When it does, I'll let you know.

I have so many ideas buzzing in my head that I never run out of potential material.

Cheers,

Drew.

I have more ideas than time to write them down - my problem is that sometimes I get stuck writing the same bit over and over again, but it's not right - so I have to walk away and come back to it later, kind of sneak up on it!

Sounds like the situation with the pie hud. Will sneak back to it eventually when the rest of the pieces are ready. :P
Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.

Needless to say, I no longer have it, so Mostly Deadly rolls towards conclusion plus a new plot tangent to keep it interesting (thanks to OOliteInfo).

20,000 words and rising.

Maybe I'm a few days late on this, but- to use the common internet wording-

DO WANT.

I figured a few people might want this.
I'll probably be ready for an early version release pretty soon.
Just done an update to show all planet info including population, productivity and radius.

It's going to be windows only at the moment (due to it's VB.netiness), unless I get round to doing a linux version. Mac will be out of the question for me at the moment, as I have no hackintosh due to dying laptop hard drive. Only really have semi-stable windows at the moment instead of my triple boot beast.

I suspect I may have a go at making it in Python or if I can get off my ass to learn ObjC, It might even be cross platform.

Other possibilities I have in mind are a flash app on my webpage.

I'll see what pans out.
