Disappearing torus drive streaking spacedust effect

Post by Wildeblood »

Okti posted a new OXP last night which has odd side-effects on my computer (a 32-bit Win7 Celeron laptop): Subject: [RELEASE]AutoSkim OXP

If I activate this equipment then enter hyper-space without bothering to disengage Autoskim, when I emerge in the new system there is no streaking dust visual effect with torus drive.

Okti has added a this.shipWillEnterHyperspace function to de-activate his script, but it still happens. Even though the console message saying it's been de-activated appears, in the new system I have hyper-speed but no streaking space-dust effect. (I like it, I never liked the dust.)

His script involves frame callbacks and other techniques beyond my comprehension, so there is nothing I can usefully add. Can someone confirm this? (Confirm the disappearing dust, not my lack of comprehension.)

This is happening when you jump to another system after sun-skimming, yes?
This behaviour has already been noted, I believe.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Yes. But even if I jumped before I got near the sun, just by having his script active.

Oddest thing: I just tried it again, and it's not doing it now. But I swear I used his new version last time and it still happened. Honest.

The disappearing dust has been reported before and I think it is not related to Okti's OXP but to the fact that some gfx cards seem to have issues with handling the dust effects using shaders.

Can you try adding the code below to the end of the file gpu-settings.plist, found in oolite.app/Config, just before the final closing curly brace and let us know if it helps?

Code: Select all

"Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family" =
{
		match =
		{
			vendor = "Intel";
			renderer = "Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family";
		};
		maximum_shader_level = "SHADERS_SIMPLE";
		default_shader_level = "SHADERS_SIMPLE";
		use_dust_shader = false;	// Vertex shaders are emulated on CPU.
};
Shfit-restart Oolite just to be sure and hopefully stardust will be back and without intermittent failures.

I've read about disappearing dust, but never seen it happen before. I removed the fixed version, and had another try with Okti's first version. Earlier, it was reliably interfering with the dust effect. Tonight, not so. :?: It did leave a 10.8 MB log file though. So perhaps last night Oolite and my poor laptop were just too busy writing the error log to draw the streaks too?

Interestingly I've just had this happen and not with Okti's OXP installed. Filled up with fuel at the sun and immediately jumped to target system - no streaks following the jump. Never come across it before (but very rarely sun skim.)
