wow. talk about an anticlimax.
Re: A change of plans
The important point in Ahrumans post is this part
We already have a great game, and it will be maintained. Also, while Ahruman has been the Main developer, there are other contributors as well. So while this is a bit disappointing, I'm going to enjoy what there is and there are a lot of new OXP's in the workings. I choose to stay positive.Ahruman wrote:My intention now is to get 1.76 finished (within the next couple of months). After that, I will only be working on bug and compatibility fixes as necessary, no new features.

Hi Ahurman,
I'm not smart enough to actually write code, But
As the dolphins once said, "Thanks for all the fish".
The game is great and will be even better when you have a decent holiday and just potter around for as long as.
I for one wouldn't be so addicted to this game without great coders like you.
Tis a good addiction..
p.s. The dolphin quote is from Hitch Hikers Guide.
in case anyone didn't read it.

This statement above gives me some worries. Probably because of a job I once had.
Let's play a role-game.
We put on white clothes and become medical doctors.
What is our first thought?
We will smell insuline - or, to put it right - the lack of insuline.
The guy shall take a normal routine health-examination.
Period.
Sounds strange, maybe, but a ship regularly needs maintenance - and so do we.
It is easy done, and if you don't trust doctors ( I don't ) then just ask for the result of the laboratory-test.
And the normal values.
You don't need to be a professor to see if something is wrong.
But what will hopefully happen is that the doctor will say that your health is better than his.
And he will angrily throw you out.
But that can be a rather good kick too.
The reason I mention this is because your sentence above, could be used for medical students, as an example of how a person with a diabetic 2 feels, without treatment.
Now.. off with the white clothes and on with an old blue cloathing and a red or black toppy hat.
We are now an ancient astrolog with access to modern data.
When he sees the statement above he will just laugh happily.
- Ahh... and what do we have here? A genius - I can easily spot.
Uranus and Pluto is now seriously fighting.
And as geniuses gets their power from Uranus, they will suffer now.
It's like a blockage or a lack of energy.
But Pluto belongs to the universal cleansing-patrul.
All that is wrong or not wanted or needed will be washed away.
The process rarely feels good.
But the end-result will be very good.
Astrology is not based on stars or planets.
They are just markers.
It is, at least logically, based on time-cycles or rhytms.
And as these planets are not in any hurry, it can take some time.
But things clears up when November comes closer.
And now we happily takes off the thick clothes and the strange hat. Too hot for such clothing this time of the year.
On with some normal clothes. The important thing is that we look "proper" and trust-worthy.
We are now a sociolog.
S(he) will slap herself on the forehead and whisper so low that you can hardly hear it.
- There is a word you should look up in your dictionary. It is called Vacation.
And when the book already is open you could look for the word Relaxation too.
You are not God so the world will continue to spin around its axis, even if you don't give a bloody something.
Breath the trees, the grass, the rain and even the stars. And try to exist just one day without the bloody computer and phone.
That will do you good.
If it is a he, then he will look around and then add:
- Your wife. Buy Paris for her. What?? Nooo.. I did not mean the City Paris. It is a perfume. And it is rather magic.
But... don' tell any other woman about it. If you do there will be trouble. I once almost got my ear cut off because of that.
Women can be sooo.. jealous.
As we have normal clothes on, then - why not try a psycholog too. That would be fun.
He would probably say something like:
- You have a fight going on inside you. There are some ideas fighting each other.
Try to find out which the ideas really are. And stop the fight.
Fighting costs a tremendous amount of energy.
And that energy can be used for better things.
But... it is maybe not so easy to find these ideas, after all.
500 Cr - Thank You.
And - finally... it is only me left.
And I just say:
Trust your choices - and all will be well.
And.. I wish you a lot of energy and happiness!
Re: A change of plans
You have my respect and best wishes on your next project!
Re: A change of plans
Thankyou for so many thousand light-years of fun.
Re: A change of plans
I can't imagine how much time you and the rest of the team have put into this project, but believe me it is truly appreciated. Until about 8 months ago I never thought I'd find anything to match the glory days of Elite.
Best of luck Ahruman, and many thanks.

Re: A change of plans
Thank you so much Ahruman for all the work you've put into Oolite - and not just the actual game code either, all the work you've done on oxp demos explaining the more technical stuff, the GLSL Shader tutorials on the wiki etc... oh man so much cool stuff - the animated billboard shader that inspired the trade outpost oxp, and A_C compiling for me a preview build of oolite.exe with the normal mapping stuff in and then seeing a normal mapped cobra III in game for the first time, so exciting!
After not having played oolite for ages, i started a new commander just the other week, i'd forgotten just how much fun the game is, it really is the best version of Elite i've ever played.

Dear Jens,
Much like our Master and Commander, you have a done an outstanding job, above and beyond the call of duty. Oolite 1.76 will be a great game, and a fitting legacy to your work and Giles' work before you.
I do hope you will lurk and provide informed witty comments from time to time and that after a few weeks you will be able to enjoy sitting back, grabbing some OXPs and watch the game unfold as you blast/trade/explore your way through the Eight Galaxies.
Best wishes,
Oscar

A 24-laser salute is in order, I think ... a band, full dress uniform, clean socks, the works.

Re: A change of plans
I've read this just now. Well I also like to thank you very very very much for bringing the game as far as it is. It is still magic.
Hope someone out of the community with enough skills will step forward.

Re: A change of plans
I only just found Oolite and its bloody great!
Sad you are going to give it a rest, but fair play to you for everything you have done so far.

Re: A change of plans
Job bloody well done Ahruman. Having just re-watched Wrath of Kahn (for the umpteenth time), I am kinda feeling how Kirk must've felt after Spock died. Sad, at the loss of future development, but happy to have what I have.
Having said that, any contenders for a successor?

You were the best Oolite team leader I've ever seen in action. The first, too.
Will Oolite 2.0 ever be made???
