How do I build Oolite 1.75.3 on Linux?
I am going to install a new Linux distro, and when I do I'd like to build Oolite from source. I am not a programmer, and I have never built a program from source before, but I'd love to try.

What distro are we talking about? If it is Ubuntu, you can follow the instructions in the sticky by Getafix. Be aware that if you have never built anything from source before, it may be quite a daunting task.

It does sound like a difficult idea, but I'm willing. I use Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, so those instructions will probably work.

The question is: "Why do you want to build from source?"
Because unless you're going to fiddle with some of the compile options or hack the base code, thus creating a unique version specifically for you (that will be out of date the next time a trunk nightly rolls out) then building from the source is pointless.
For everything other than hacking the code yourself, there's the excellent distro-neutral tarball install.

I have never done a build, and I'd like to try it. Other then that, I guess maybe I'll hack the code a bit, or at least read through it to see what's there.
Unless I find a good change to the source code I like, I'll probably go back to the tarball. But I at least want to see the code, and maybe edit it a wee bit...
