[UPDATED 12/8/12]-Deep Horizon Industries - Navigation Buoy

Post by Cmd. Cheyd »

A small blue-skinned humanoid approaches the podium in front of the assembled members of the press. After scanning the room, he begins reading aloud from his notes...

"I'd like to thank you all for coming today. First, on a personal matter. As you know, I am Cheyd Vlos'Oplyn, CEO of Deep Horizon Industries. Despite a few rumors to the contrary, and the sincere wishes of some of DHI's competitors, I was not killed recently in the Tionisla massacre. While I was in the system on a personal matter around the time of the Thargoid attack there, I was never in any danger. I had exited the system upon completion of my visit prior to the Thargoid attack that destroyed Station 3 and threatened Station 5. Now that that is settled, let's get to the good stuff...

Deep Horizon Industries is proud to announce that we recently won a contract from GalCOP for the immediate design, manufacture, and deployment of new Navigation Buoys across all eight charts. DHI's extensive manufacturing capabilities, combined with our superior technological capabilities as shown in our terraforming division, and our reputation for rugged engineering from our agricultural machinery division, made us a natural choice. Our engineers have been hard at work to design the new navigation buoys, attempting to not only meet GalCOP's requirements, but to surpass them in every possible way. The results of those efforts, the GFL-1 Witchpoint Tunnel Demarkation Buoys and GFL-2 Station Traffic Orientation and Control Buoys are being deployed at all stations and planets across the Eight.

If you would like more information on these buoys, or on Deep Horizon Industries itself - Please visit us at:
Deep Horizon Industries
Thank you. I will now open the floor to questions..."

Very nice Cheyd... they look real cool in-game.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Cool! 8)
Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.

That looks really nice. I'm impressed.
One question though. How will this work in relations to YAH.

No clues Gimi. I don't run YAH. Feedback is welcome!

--Edit--
Well, I have done some very limited and quick testing, and so far YAH ad buoys have vanished form my Ooniverse. If at all possible, I would like to have the DH buoy replace the standard buoy, but leave YAH alone. Not happing at the moment it seems.

I have done some more testing, and things seem normal. DH buoy does not interfere with YAH as far as I can see.
(Not sure what happend the first time round though and, yes, I did check one high tech system).

In addition to replacing the standard buoy, any way this can replace the buoy that is being towed in buoyRepair.oxp. Would do wonders for consistency.

Is the license file supposed to say “Created on: 17 Nov 2010”?

Yeah. That's when I started the project. I've not exactly been rushing this project. :P

It’s customary to use the publication date – that’s when copyright comes into effect. Not that it matters or anything. :-)

Really? Well that's a bugger. So the 95,000 words of my WIP novel (2 years in the writing) aren't my copyright until I publish them? So if somebody steals my memory stick - and releases the work before I do, I can't claim Copyright? Eek!

That just doesn't feel right (even if it is the state of the law) :(

No, that was a bad choice of words. The tradition of stating a year or date with a copyright claim comes from older forms of copyright, where there was a time limit tied to the publication date. If someone stole your memory stick under such a regime, they’d be committing copyright infringement, but your time limit wouldn’t start counting down since you didn’t exercise your right to publish the work.

Currently pretty much everywhere uses time limits that count down from the year the author died (“lifetime plus N years”) except when the copyright is held by a legal person, and copyright statements with attached years aren’t required and don’t have any legal meaning. However, it’s still traditional to use the year of publication (except in the record industry, where it’s traditional to use the year you’re printing the packaging in order to suggest a longer claim than you validly have).
