Bio-laser

Now, for Oolite, maybe that would explain how things like a Thargoid laser would be different in how they function from standard lasers. If much of Thargoid technology is partially biological based (some of their ships look like it's a possibility), that would explain a bit why Thargoid technology isn't easily adapted to non-Thargoid ships. Some Thargoid ships do tend to look a bit organic.

The other thought was that maybe star jellies (or somewhat similar yet-to-be-discovered life-form) might put out small laser bursts as a signal for mating or ... uhh.. whatever life-forms signal about. But seeing the laser flicker in the distance might clue a player that there's a pod of space jellies a bit off the spacelane or something.
Sleep? Who needs sleep? Got game. No need sleep.
