Problem with OpenGL, please help!

Post by Esch »

I just found out about Oolite today from a friend and installed the latest 174.1 Test Release for the PC. I have a Nvidia Geforce 512m 9800 GTX+ video card and the game is pretty choppy even if I turn the settings down. It's REALLY choppy if I have a planet in front of me. The card is only 3 years old so should be able to handle this easily.

I start investigating here and find it is probably an OpenGL problem (greyed out in the options for me) and that I need 2.0+ in order to be able to use them.

I download a program to view the OpenGL settings (program is called: OpenGl Extensions Viewer 3.0) and it says I have version 3.0. However, if I go into the log file for this game, it says this:

[rendering.opengl.version]: OpenGL renderer version: 1.1.0 ("1.1.0")
Vendor: Microsoft Corporation
Renderer: GDI Generic

Clearly something is out of whack. I'm not sure how I could have two different versions running. Anyone have an idea how I can get this game to stop using MSC's version and use Nvidia's? Thanks for your help!

Try modifying the game's shortcut target so that it starts with the -nosplash parameter. This has been known to resolve similar problems reported in the past. We believe that some OpenGL drivers do not handle window resizing very well (or maybe we are doing something wrong, who knows ;-) ) and not displaying the splash screen is a way to not generate a window resize event.

Hi 9swampy and welcome... I have the -nosplash set as it makes loading the game smoother.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!
