A Rednecks Guide to the Galaxy... I like that idea, it would make entertaining reading.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

How about this for a reverse/alternative of the Gravity Waves billboard:
I like the idea of throwing in a QR code

I know it could be said that I dicked you around in relation to the entire map thing. Although you may not believe me I am truly sorry. Mainly because I wasted your time, and your not the kind of person that needs their time wasted especially when you come up with stuff as cool as this!PhantorGorth wrote:How about this for a reverse/alternative of the Gravity Waves billboard:

This is a fantastic idea sir! I would say that maybe you could get away with it being a bit smaller (you know making it a challenge for commanders getting close enough for a accurate snapshot). Still, Very Very cool.

Apologies accepted, mind, it could also be argued I was taking over your baby, so I don't think it was totally a one person's fault and I am sorry for that. Anyway what's past is past I would rather we moved on to better things. Thanks for the vote of confidence with this.ClymAngus wrote:I know it could be said that I dicked you around in relation to the entire map thing. Although you may not believe me I am truly sorry. I have done a 1/2 size version below. I can't do it any other size as each bit square is now a single pixel (previously 2x2 pixels) any other size (other than multiples) will cause scanning issues:

especially since the ads are stretched to fit the billboards, there would be some noticeable blurring on it.
However, the ads don't technically need to be 256 x 128 they are just that way to keep the oxps file size down, you could make it 512 x 256 for use on your own PC by replacing one of the other pics with it...

I should probably test it by replacing an existing one(s) in YAH and see how it looks. I will see of there is an easy way to make a test billboard or a way to set a particular billboard. The worse case would be to use only one set and change all the images to the test image.ADCK wrote:especially since the ads are stretched to fit the billboards, there would be some noticeable blurring on it.

Well they're not stretched - they just are 256x128, they look perfect from about 2-3km away and then they start to look blurry as you move closer.

Guess I should of said "take on all the attributes of being stretched without actually being stretched" hehe...DaddyHoggy wrote:Well they're not stretched - they just are 256x128, they look perfect from about 2-3km away and then they start to look blurry as you move closer.
But you know what I mean.
As for testing higher res billboards, It could get tricky just trying to randomly stumble upon one, would probably be easier to create a custom billboard by copying the standard ones and spawning it or having it start at a set location. But it should work, Oolite handles texture replacers well.

Re: YOUR AD HERE!!! 300 ads (sets A, B, C, D, E, F & G)
Most of my more recent Billboards (last 2 years or so) I've kept a 1024x512 copy of them - I've wondered about a Hi-Res version of YAH for those who want it - but then you see the lo-res ones in game and most of them (those without text) look fine.
If anybody is interested I'll make my 1024x512s available.

You can replace blurry magnification with pixely magnification as follows:
Of course, this applies to the whole texture, not just the QR code.
Code: Select all
materials =
{
"original.png" =
{
diffuse_map = { name = "replacement.png"; mag_filter = "nearest"; };
};
};

Nice one.
We don't have many ship manufacturing ads - either "canon" ones from Dark Wheel/Trader's Guide or parodies of Earthly ones. (Foord is the only one that springs instantly to mind)

Problem with most of the names on that list is that they don't work - either visually, or pronunciation - and yes SOobaru (or was it SOobaroo?) has been done.
I don't like ones where you just misspell a proper word eg. General Motoors (what's the reasoning for the word Motors to be incorrectly spelt?)
I've fallen foul of this myself - my HD is full of abandoned ads where I started and realised it just looked rubbish and/or made no sense.
