If your animated .gif is not looped (IE. it stops on the final frame) then the final frame will be displayed if it is cached in your browser and the animation will not play. If your final frame is black - then all you'll see is a black image.

thanks but, oh I looped all right!

can't imagine anything else than the main issue being the preservation of transparency bit..
