See also the top project downloads list on http://developer.berlios.de/. (Apparently this traffic mostly came from one IP which has now been blocked. Credit to another_commander for paying attention.)

Stupid question: why would someone download the game thousands of times? Is that meant as some kind of attack?Ahruman wrote:See also the top project downloads list on http://developer.berlios.de/. Could be a proxy that masks the IP addresses of the users behind it...Commander McLane wrote:Stupid question: why would someone download the game thousands of times? It seems so. Either that, or astroturfing.Commander McLane wrote:Stupid question: why would someone download the game thousands of times? Is that meant as some kind of attack?
I doubt 95 % of our users proxy through a small ISP in southern Russia. :-)maik wrote:Could be a proxy that masks the IP addresses of the users behind it...

Sorry for being dense, but I still don't get it. How are masses of downloads an attack? And who is the attacked? We? BerliOs? Is it about shutting their servers down by using up all bandwidth? And is a random choice that they chose Oolite for the download?Ahruman wrote:It seems so. And astroturfing? That's about gaining influence by creating a fake movement. But where would they want to gain influence? And in regard to what? Through downloading a game? That doesn't really make sense to me.
I apologize again. I'm not being intentionally dense here. I really just don't get, for what purpose and to what end someone would use the means of downloading a game a couple of thousand times. It looks like a massive weapon, but I have no clue why and against whom someone would use such a weapon.

Well, I don’t know. Feel free to track the perp down and ask. Could just be a broken script of some sort.
