Here's where I am so far. I went into System, Administration, Synaptic Package Manager, looked up Oolite package, and executed a full removal from the system. Then I restarted the comp.. When I checked to see if Oolite was still there.....it was. In fact, I don't think anything changed at all, LOL!!!

Movin' on.
OK, you might get away with leaving it in place, that version is ancient, BTW, and most OXPs probably won't work anyway . . .

Try again using the installer, using sudo, and with luck it will install to a different place or overwrite the root one.

ALL RIGHT, NOW I'M GETTING SOMEWHERE!!!!!!!!!! Seems I had to go to "Manage 3rd Party Software" in System Tools, and just have Oolite removed. It was so simple that now I'm kind of suspicious of what actually happened, LOL!!!!

Now trying to install the newer version of Oolite, 1.75 x 86, as per m4r35n357s suggestion. So far all that is happening, after I clicked on it to Install, and put in my password, is an orange bar is going back and forth across the "Install" box, like it can't find something. Hmmmm, I'm not sure it really IS better than 1.65 x 86 (no offense intended, m4r35n357).

So the autopackage installer has started, and the first thing it does is to download and install autopackage itself (a parallel package manager to APT which coexists in harmony).
It would seem from what you are saying that it is failing to download and install autopackage itself. Did it ask for a sudo password?

Yes, as the password it asked for was what I used for sudo initially. I turned back and reinstalled the version that came with Ubuntu 10.10. I've been playing it, and am right back to where I was in the game before I got rid of the other version. Should I maybe try to upgrade this version instead?

Ok, thanks. I'm downloading the latest version for Linux x86 64. I'll work on the installation in a bit. How do you find this stuff? I've looked all over the forums of Oolite, Ubuntu, and Gnustep, and hadn't seen that one yet.

Well, I'm busy fighting for my life right now, so I can't install the new download just yet. Hopefully I'll be around for a while too. :)

Alllll Righty, I didn't know it was possible to open applications by simply dragging, and dropping them into a Terminal Window. I did this with Oolite 1.75, and it took off like a bat out of hell. I couldn't install it any other way. It is a REALLY COOL upgrade. Now I'm shooting on trying this with OXPs. :D
