Post by Shino »

I really like this game but I have some questions..

How do I open the communications log, I have an ibook and I don't see that key on my keyboard.
Same for advanced compass target.

I've an iBook G4 and the keys are as follows:

` is between the left-hand shift and the z key.
\ is between ' and the return key, just above the right-hand shift.

What iBook do you have?

(edit)
I should add that mine's a UK model and that other nationalities may have keys in different places.

Your best bet will be to simply edit keyconfig.plist to assign the fuctions to different keys. Something like this in AddOns/Config/keyconfig.plist should do the trick:

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
	<key>key_comms_log</key>
	<integer>96</integer><!-- edit this to the ASCII value of the required key -->
	<key>key_next_compass_mode</key>
	<integer>92</integer><!-- edit this to the ASCII value of the required key -->
</dict>
</plist>
"The planet Rear is scourged by well-intentioned OXZs."

Thanks for stepping in. I'd just found that thread, but didn't know if the info was still current.

Hmm

What should I do now, I got my ship full equiped with best laser and all the things I could buy. Shooting some trading ships now and looting them :)
But what is the best way to get money ? and what ship should I buy

And final question, what does galactic hyperdrive do ? It takes me to another galactic chart ? and I can only use it once ?

Well to make money as you start out the best strategy is to do some trading:
The best profits can be made by buying agricultural produce (mostly Liquor/Wines and Furs) at 'Poor Aricultural' planets and selling them at 'Rich Industrials'. Then buying Computers or Luxuries at the 'Rich Industrials' and selling them at 'Poor Agriculturals'. There are plenty of other trading strategies that involve round trips via 3 or more different types of economies, but I tend to stick with the one I've mentioned.

As you start out, you'll probably want to avoid Anarchy, Feudal or Multi-government worlds as they are the most dangerous for a simple trader with only a pulse laser for *ahem*, 'Home Defense'.

In Oolite I find that one of the first bits of equipment I buy is an ECM system as I haven't been able to shoot down any missiles on purpose. Then I go for an extended cargo bay (usually when I can afford to buy more than 20 tons of Computers), beam laser, docking computer (Shift+D really speeds the game up) then fuel/cargo scoops, an extra energy unit, targeting computer, Fuel Injectors, mil. Lasers.

if you really are equipped with the best stash, and look to make money, I suggest going on a killing spree. some very appealing money is to be made by wacking the Constrictor, and you need to murder quite a bit before that mission is offered to you. there's no rush to leave Galaxy 1 before this.

the *best* ship? that must be the one that maneuvers most the way you like it, at the speed vs cargo capacity compromise closest to meet your needs.. ;)

I usually look for a combination of Rich Ind/ poor Agr.(anarchy) then do trade runs.

While computers-liquor runs are most consistent, I find that the wild fluctuations of narcotic prices gives me the best returns.

Commonly narcotics will be offered at the RI for rockbottom prices (<25Cr) which then can usually be sold at the PA planet for maximum profit (102.7Cr).

It might be helpfull to have a planet full of frogs to sell to.

Avoid loitering around police when offender. ;)

ps: Is it impossible to dock with a Behemoth when Offender?

Rich Industrial and Poor Agricultural

EDIT
I do furs <> compooters; plus loads of gems, gold and stuff from Hermits, and off-load them when The Price Is Right. :wink:
Very funny, Scotty, now beam down my clothes...

Yes, always dock with a hermit. If only to load up on gems/gold. They pay good for liquor too.

Price variation in furs is less than in narcs, I think.

a good way to make money is to leave the station empty, fly to the witch
point and back killing and scooping everything until your cargo hold is full.
then dock (manually; you won't be welcome) and sell everything never mind
prices.
you can do this until the market fills up. then move on to the next anarchy.

(edit: by 'good' i mean 'effective')

aye, i often do that. or, if i can, follow a big trader through a wormhole, knock off it's escorts and then gently laser the trader til it releases its cargo in a nice, easily scoopable line. then knock it off and head to the station. W/S fuel costs are negligable, and what little you do use in burners is easily recouped.
