Hello... and 2 questions!

Post by Buzby »

Hi - It's good to have joined the friendliest board this side of Riedquat ;)

Having recently got round to trying Oolite, I would like to say thank you and congratulations to those involved in creating it - I've had an enjoyable time reliving the many lost hours of my youth playing Elite, and now I'm enjoying some of the add-ons and playing with graphics and features that I'm sure they would have included if only the BBC hadn't been limited to so little memory!

In traditional new member style, however, I've got a couple of questions to follow up the much deserved praise with. In this case, they relate to the OXPs.

Firstly, I installed BGS-A and seem to have ended up with two voices for many of the spoken lines. One seemingly can't be changed and uses a standard-style computer voice, and the other is a little quieter and responds to the settings options (ie, Male / Female, English RP / Standard etc). At times they say exactly the same things but with one slightly delayed creating a rather odd effect. Is there a way to turn one of them off - preferably the louder one?

Secondly, I have downloaded "Your Ad Here" but have failed to get it to work. The instructions left me slightly confused as to the required directory structure so I have tried a few to no avail. The main OXP clearly goes into Addons, and I currently have the pack OXPs in there too, along with the pack update ones. Is this correct, or should everything be inside the main Your_Ad_Here.OXP folder? In addition, I have copied the shipdata files from the config folders of the updates over the original ones in the packs, as it indicated this was required on Linux systems (which this is).

So, clearly I have done something wrong but I'm not sure what! I also noticed on the wiki that it says this OXP hasn't yet been verified as working with version 1.75 (I am running 1.75.1) so could that be the problem here?

Thanks!

Hi Busby, and welcome to the Friendliest Board this side of Riedquat.
I'm afraid I don't use BGS, but remember someone else mentioning the same problem. Fo YAH I think you have to have the main OXP and the packs and the updates all in AddOns. Again I don't currently have YAH installed so can't be certain.
However both your problems have been covered at length here on the board, so a search should find the answers you are looking for.
Sorry I can't be more help, but this thread will show you how to set up a search function specifically for the Bulletin Board which you will find very useful.
Cheers,
Smivs.

Oolite itself uses eSpeak (a text2speech engine) which can be configured (ie, On/Off, Male/Female etc) and BGS uses audio files. Two completely different mechanisms and a few possible scenarios:

1. Turn off eSpeak. This way you get rid of the generated voices and BGS-A can do it's job.
2. Use BGS-I and BGS-M instead of BGS-A and turn off the countdown (this.bgsDisableJump) to use eSpeak only.
3. Rename the _descriptions.plist to descriptions.plist in BGS-A to clean out some of the generated voices.

For more infos about the configuration of the script in BGS see [wiki]BGS_Doc[/wiki].

FWIW, I had exactly the same thing when I first started and this is how I sorted it out. Nice & simple. HTH, Ian.

Thanks guys - that sorted the speech problem... nice and simple :)

With a fresh pair of eyes today I also managed to get Your Ad Here working. I'm not sure how the problem arose, but the permissions for the files and folders were set wrong - a simple chmod fixed that, followed by holding shift while loading Oolite.
