Supermoon

Post by Smivs »

Tonight sees a Supermoon, the best you'll see for 28 years. A supermoon is a full-moon when the moon is nearest to the Earth.

Clear skies and cold weather in Norway. Beautiful moon. Just explained to my children why the moon is so big.

Likewise, except for the Norway and the children bits.

The moon appears to be very bright and also very white here.

Having posted this I nearly forgot to go and have a look  It doesn't look obviously closer than normal, but it certainly is very bright.

The Moon didn't look any bigger to me either.
I think I read somewhere that the Moon's apparent size would increase by 14%.
If my calculations are correct, the apparent diameter would then only increase by 6%, hence it wouldn't appear obviously bigger.
Then again, my calculations could be wrong

The moon looked bigger to me, but then again I've just moved into a third-floor flat, on top of a hill ...

We like the moon because it is close to us.

(probably shouldn't open this link up at work) Not because it's filthy but it's an immediate flash load and the volume is set to 11.
