Mac build system non-update

Post by JensAyton »

This post is only of interest if you build Oolite for Mac OS X yourself.

Xcode 4 is out. I’m not in a hurry to get it, and I definitely won’t be switching Oolite over to it before MNSR.

It is my understanding that Xcode 4 does not support pre-Snow Leopard SDKs. It’s possible to build for Tiger and Leopard using the Snow Leopard SDK, but it will require some fiddling. For private builds, changing to the Snow Leopard SDK and disabling “Treat Warnings as Errors” is likely to work (you’ll get a lot of warnings about deprecated methods).

It is also my understanding that you can run Xcode 3 and Xcode 4 side by side, as long as you don’t install both in the same place. I suspect the App Store version of Xcode 4 installs in /Developer with no option to put it elsewhere, so if you have Xcode 3 there and use the App Store installer you’ll need to reinstall Xcode 3 somewhere else. There’s an option for this in the installer.

As a follow-up, Xcode 3.2.6 also came out yesterday, and Oolite builds with it with no changes (as long as the Mac OS X 10.4 SDK is checked in the installer). As far as I can tell, there are no changes in 3.2.6 that affect Mac development.

MNSR?

BTW, i just tried to install xcode 3 again. it refuses to go anywhere but the system volume, and you can't choose the folder either. so much for installing both :-(

Mythical Next Stable Relase: there hasn't been a release labelled stable since 1.65, which was about 6 years ago... after a while the concept of stable releases started to fade into the realm of legends... we seem to be about to change all that with the upcoming release of 1.76, though! ;)

1.76 is going to be labelled stable, thus breaking the pattern we've had in the last 6 years or so: that's what I'm saying.

The stable/test labelling system we've been using referred mainly to the OXP API & shaders implementation, it took us quite a while to get here from there... ;)

The opposite, actually. What he's saying is that it's going to happen quite soon.

Do you happen to have read the release notes of versions 1.75 and 1.75.1? The word "beta" in the version names should be a hint in itself.
