Hooked again......an introduction and an OXP question.
Greetings to all you Ooliteers out there.
Just a brief introduction and a thank-you to the development team and all the OXP'ers out there. I played original Elite for far too long as a youngster firstly on the Acorn Electron and then on the Amstrad CPC6128. After a long break Elite-TNK came along and resparked my interest and I was very sorry to see it withdrawn. Also tried the Frontier games (very poor IMHO) and messed around with emulating ArcElite and BBC Elite A. I've installed Oolite a couple of times over the last few years, but found the OXP list a bit daunting to say the least and never really got comfortable in the Cobra seat again.....until this week.
So a week off work, a long list of DIY jobs around the house and what do I do - pop into the Oolite pages to see that 1.75 beta has just been released....and then come across Griff's beautiful retextures. Dive into the OXP list and see some of the amazing things that have been achieved, installed, loaded up a few OXP's and bam.......hooked again, just like the first time I played and just like when I discovered ETNK.......damn you Oolite developers...... ......... 5 days on and the better half is starting to get a bit annoyed at the lack of progress on my list of jobs. Anyway I digress......
As a suggestion have the developers considered a central repository for OXP downloads (with a download count) so newbies can maybe get an idea of what are the best/most popular OXP's. Possibly even with a user rating score? It really is quite daunting as a newbie trawling through the available OXP - especially when compatibility issues have to be explored between different OXPs and with the current release of Oolite itself. Some sort of prompt as to which are 'the best' would I think be useful. And hopefully OXP'ers have got big enough shoulders that a poorly rated or poorly downloaded release won't dent their confidence, and will maybe just prompt them to improve their OXPs?
Anyway just a suggestion.......well 5 days back into the seat, and I've just made it to poor, although I'm already close to making my Griff Cobra into an Iron Ass. Hopefully I'll have some time to learn the scripting engine as I've got a vague idea for a Beyond Elite mission involving the mythical Raxxla.....but that's probably a long way off. In the meantime looking forward to immersing myself in the ooniverse.
Fly safe pilots....

Re: Hooked again......an introduction and an OXP question.
Hi and welcome back to the pilot's seat.
Having a list of 'the best' OXPs would be nice in an ideal world, but it's not really something that can be done practically. The way I see it, asking which OXP is the best is the same as asking which color is the best. You can't really have this answered by others, you will have to find for yourself. It might be easier asking yourself "what do I want to see in the game" and then look in the OXP list for something that comes as close as possible to your wishes.

Oh... and welcome Capt. Murphy.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Re: Hooked again......an introduction and an OXP question.
Greeting Capt Murphy, and welcome to the friendliest board this side of Riedquat.
There have been a few attempts to create a central repository of all the OXPs but frankly the idea is a non-starter for several reasons. You will find many threads around the board on this subject if you're really interested in why.
As for favourite OXPs, well everybody has their own, although some are obviously more popular than others.
You've already found Griff's excellent ships, and there are other popular ship sets out there as well. Random Hits seems to have a big following as does Your Ad Here.
The general advice with OXPs is to start with eye-candy, then slowly add mission and flavour OXPs as you go along. Half the fun is trying them, and they are easily removed if you find any you don't like, so you can ultimately 'design' your own Ooniverse to be just the way you want it.
Cheers,
Smivs.

I knew it would go like this. Well, no. It's blue, the darker and intese shade of it.El Viejo wrote:Imperial purple, of course.

What planet did you grow up on. There is no discussion nor doubt, Royal Blue is and always will be the best colour.El Viejo wrote:Imperial purple, of course.another_commander wrote:which color is the best.
Oh... and welcome Capt. Murphy.
(I smell a derailed thread again. When will they start producing Royal Blue Jelly Babies)

Re: Hooked again......an introduction and an OXP question.
Thanks for the welcome guys - I take on board your comments about OXP's and that's basically what I've spent my last couple of days doing......currently got this little lot in my Add-Ons folder and will probably install Assassins and Cataclysm at a later date. Random Hits is cool, although not good enough to be accepted for a mission yet, I've made a small fortune smuggling Narcotics from a seedy space bar (less than a credit a ton) to the same system main station (nearly 100 credits a ton) - yee haa...
OXP's currently installed - Oolite 1.75beta.

Re: Hooked again......an introduction and an OXP question.
You only will need Assassins in Galaxy 7. Depending on where you are now and how frequently you change your galaxy that may take a while.Capt. And Cataclysm unfortunately doesn't play nice with Oolite 1.75. The OXP needs a major makeover. On the other hand you're going to be busy with Assassins first, because Cataclysm will only start if you've made the full circle and are in Galaxy 1 for the second time. Which gives me a little time to overhaul the OXP, I guess.

The ooniverse welcomes careful drivers. A good HUD and some maps although not mandatory (yet) are highly recommended.

I beg to differ, the blue we are looking for is defined here (the darker of the two here defined).Commander McLane wrote:To be precise, it's IKB.another_commander wrote:I knew it would go like this. Well, no. It's blue, the darker and intese shade of it.El Viejo wrote:Imperial purple, of course.

That explains it, I hear most people, and especially males, from Zaquesso are colour blind. Something to do with the atmosphere.El Viejo wrote:Zaquesso... the most beautiful planet in the eight, where the evil juice is purple.Gimi wrote:What planet did you grow up on.
