Joystick drift…

Post by Cody »

Have any joystick players using trunk noticed a drift when releasing the ’stick? In 1.74.x my ’stick is perfect… I let go and the crosshairs stay put.
In 1.75.x, as soon as I release the ’stick the view starts to move (most noticeable in the roll), even in precision mode.

I'm using trunk version 4341 (Linux and a Logitech Attack 3 joystick) without noticing this problem.
AFAIR trunk version 4263 didn't had the problem either.

Thanks gizmo... that's the same 'stick I use. Hmm... maybe it's only my machine then.
I'll try the latest trunk, and yet another re-calibration. Ho-hum!

I should've mentioned that I don't use any "special" joystick kernel modules, just the default one in Ubuntu 10.04.

Edited to add:
no problem in trunk 4351 either

Well, I've been trying most of today with r4356, but the drift remains.
I've used Logitech's own software, re-configured the 'stick several times... all to no avail.

It works fine in 1.74.x, but not in trunk... 1.75 is going to drive me crackers!

The joystick code has been refactored, but as far as I can tell the deazone handling is doing the same thing for SDL builds. (For Mac OS X, there’s a smaller deadzone coupled with nonlinear response and no precision mode switch, which is a better overall solution… Alex’s joystick patch only included that in the Mac subclass, and I forgot about it until yesterday.)

I need to download the trunk at some point to do some stuff for Eric W, if/when I do I'll give my faithful old Firestorm 2 a whirl and see if it drifts - Windows I presume?

Just taken r4373 out for a quick spin, and the drift seems to have improved.
Has anything been tweaked? If so, then many thanks.
I'll run it some more later, but at first sight, the problem is now lessened considerably.

Just downloaded the latest test release and have encountered the same issue. :?
I'm using windows too.
I tried to configure my controller to see if this would solve the problem, but the drift still remains.

I'm sure you have tried, but can you adjust dead zone. I had to go all the way up to 18% in 1.75. In 1.74.2 I had the dead zone set to 10%. But everything works fine now, and it may well be my joystick wearing out. It's quite old.

There was indeed a small issue with the joystick deadzone on the SDL builds and a most likely fix is in the trunk now. Anyone who experiences joystick drift, please test and let us know.

It is also a matter of wear and tear. If the joystick is worn, the dead-zone may need to be increased. (Analogue Joysticks that is).
I will give my two tools of the trade a test, reducing the dead zone again.
