Outrageous Charges

Post by Dilbert »

Everywhere I go these days some ripoff grease-monkey wants to charge me for a "Maintenance Overhaul". So the old Cobra's got a few dings, (only from docking mishaps, honest officer), and the paint job's looking a little tatty. So what? Is it really worth the 1,800Cr (or the 2,300Cr some shops want to charge me)?

And how do I rack up these charges in the first place?

does my ship (really) need maintenance sooner when i get hit a
lot by debris and lasers than if i would stay out of trouble or does
it just degrade over time?

is there any health/damage indication other than the overhaul
showing up on the menu?

Yes, there's an increased incidence of fuel leakages and witchjump malfunctions.

I was wondering....
if my fuel leaks away...
and I go directly towards the sun,
does my fuel continue to leak or is the tank autosealing?

The tank autoseals when it's empty.

I'm pretty sure that's the case, esp. when your shields are gone and you get direct impacts.

re: the self-sealing: I had that, and it's still possible to scoop fuel, so it's a minor annoyance. Except that at the time I happened to lose my fuel injectors, and was Offender (why is still a mystery to me, blew up a Fugitive, that started screaming for help...) So I had to dodge cops AND scoop w/o injectors. (eventually I had to kill them, of course)
Well, scooping with empty tanks, no fuel injectors, and the nearest system .5-6LY away, that's tense. Od course I made it /boasts/

Made Elite on the beeb. Deadly on Atari ST, got bored though. Snipering grey blobs from a distance gets tedious after a while. Got to competent in Oolite on my crappy old windows laptop (1.10.1-gui-0.9.4) before finally despairing of the ghastly framerate and lack of space compass.

Currently 'Mostly Harmless' on my housemate's eMac, but with fuel injectors, energy unit and fore and aft militry lasers, it's only a matter of time.

These ECM hardened missiles are a bugge^h^h^h^h^h pain aren't they?

yeah, must track it down. Still I like starting from scratch.

BTW, apologies for the seeming non sequitor of my original post - I seem to have posted to the wrong thread

I suspect it's just time...

Lately I've not been jumping a lot (so I don't get a lot of clock adjustments),
just flying to the witch point and back to kill and scoop, occasionally jumping
to the nearest other system.

..and guess what.. even tho i get shot a lot, and sometimes rammed, I don't
seem to need a lot of maintenance.
