Yeah, realised that only after posting, and removed my extra 'it'd be really difficult to decide which backup to choose' paragraph/mini-essay a minute later... ;)

Just a thought.... This problem seems to be a regularly recurring one.
By writing such a line in the save file itself, it implicit says that it is officially allowed to edit a save game. :shock:

I don't think that will ever happen. :P

But frankly, if you break your saved game without making a backup, that’s your problem. Protecting against crashes caused by bad data is our problem. Protecting against self-inflicted data loss is not.
