I find facebook rather useful to be honest. But I'm only there because it is useful, rather than because it's a cool place to be. If it stops being useful, I'll be elsewhere.

I have a friend who started out on a little writing forum, writing short stories of the "horror" genre. He is about to have his first novel published. 
Come to think of it, maybe it already is out... I should check back...
