Scotty referred aluminium-oxide, not metallic aluminium. One of the crystal forms of aluminium-oxide is sapphire (Al2O3). Quite strong indeed. And Ahruman is right, 'glasses' in metallic-glasses does not refer to transparency but to the absence of crystals.
