How to you create a "deadzone" for your joystick

I fancied trying to play elite with my analogue Sidewinder Precision Pro joystick. I love the stick, but am currently finding the game unplayable when using it. Reason is that the very slightest movement it picks up on, so even when I try to center the stick the ship is drifting off in some random direction. Its almost impossible to hold the ship straight.

This is a great shame as I would love to have a go at Oolite with analogue controls.

Anyone have some suggestions please?

I think that Ganelon plays with exactly the same stick, so when he drops by, he may have some advice.

Apologies for your log-in problems… we’ve recently installed new bb software, and there have been a couple of teething problems. One of the admins will be able to sort it, I hope.

What OS do you use. I play with a dual analogue Thrustmaster Firestorm 2 under both Linux (Ubuntu) and Windows (7) and I don't have any drift and the stick requires no drivers under either OS so I hope I never need to set a deadzone!

Sorry, I should have said what OS I was using. Win 7 x64, drivers are included in the install, but I have lots of drift. I have looked around on some other forums and found some sort of logitech tweak utility. I tried it, and apart from it crashing when I tried to save the settings it made it did look like it was going to sort it out. A central deadzone of about 12% was looking like all that was needed.

One other question luminous... which version of Oolite are you running? It's always handy to know... 1.74.2 is the current release.

The version is displayed on the game window's title bar, together with the date the executable was created. If you don't see this on the title bar when running in windowed mode, you are most likely not running the latest version.

The version can also be found inside Latest.log, located in oolite.app\Logs.

Oh, and getting back to topic. Do other joysticks work with oolite without this deadzone issue? I know my joystick still works, but it is getting old. I was thinking about this one as a possibility:

If it's any help, I use an old Logitech Attack 3... no deadzone problems.
I've been eyeing this one lately... but I've got other major hardware problems atm... the PSU is playing-up.

Hmm, they both look good to me. Will have to see if mine can be sorted before I open my wallet. Such a shame for a good piece of hardware to go to waste just because of lack of software support.

As for your PSU issues, if you budget will stretch to it I highly recommend Seasonic Power Supplies. I fix PCs for a living, and these are a premium unit that most customers unfortunately don't choose to fit Very stable, very quiet PSUs with good quality cabling.
