Sweet - what three items did you go for in the end?

Well, it's not the selection of presents I would have liked to send. 2 books on origami and one on deep physics but amazon don't seem to like sending cd's as presents for some reason.

Anyway it's the thought that counts and we might sort one more small thing after new year just to bulk up to the total donation amount.

Very good news indeed. Thanks very much to Mr. ClymAngus! :D

Now if Mr. Bell would drop a note on these boards... <wanders off dreaming>.

Gentlemen! I require a small favour! I have tracked the man down to facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/iancgbell

I however find facebook to be a personal kind of kriptonite, now I was wondering if someone with an account might want to boogie on over and see if he mentions receiving "da Stuff". The amazon thingy says they were delivered in good time for Christmas, but it would be nice to know they were actually placed into his hot little hands.

This isn't an ego thing of fishing for compliments, this is purely driven by personal paranoia and a desire to know that Amazon isn't as crap as the press has spun it. Ta.

I had a quick shufty and can report the following

Ian has 26 'friends' and David Braben is not one of them
He likes the music 'Dub Chill'
He lists his interests as 'Geometric Algebra, Origami, Quantum Mechanics and Developing Computer'
He wrote the computer game 'Elite'.
He is interested in 'Women'

Last wall entry was the 13th of November. No acknowledgement of gifts.

Cheers,

Drew.

Using 'Older posts' an scrolling down reveals that there isn't much activity in there at all; about a page length below the Nov 13 entry there is one from 2009-Dec-22...

Yes, I'm finding a lot of bold beginnings and then tailing off of interest. (which is fine, a trait I have a touch of myself) but it does make it difficult tracking down the mans thoughts on paper so to speak.

Rather amusing: http://www.alioth.net/FrontierNews/wwwb ... es/99.html

Business dealings well this is where he is apparently: http://www.mobygames.com/company/slight ... os-limited

mostly all roads lead back to claranet. Can't push these things of course, but if one could unobtrusively tap into a "cool shit just appeared on my door step!!" then that would have been cool. Ho hum. :)

You're not the only one who would find some sort of recognition of receipt somewhat gratifying. But yeah, pestering the guy with "Did ya get the stuff we sent ya? Did ya? Didya?" won't fly at all.

OTOH, if the Plasma Globe had actually been in stock, I bet he would've been over here in a flash... :)

On the plus side the bought items have dropped off his amazon wish list, so at least you all know that this isn't some bizarre confidence scam. :D

You know, the thought occurred to me at the time. After all, it's a rather classic MO: Join a bulletin board. Make a few thousand posts to build credibility. Throw in some OXPs and Galactic maps for good measure.
Then a couple of years later; WHAMMO! Fleece the poor suckers for a grand total of a hundred quid...
