Hi, I'm new the oolite, but some of you may know me as the sound guy for vegastrike.. anyway, been a fan of Elite style of games..
I tried playing c64 Elite on emulator, but the emulator kept timing out, and so I found Oolite. I was trying to get into the whole wireframe mode, "fill in the polys with my imagination" style of gaming.. but it seems oolite doesn't do hidden line removal.. which I believe the original Elite does.
are there plans to add this feature? Although I understand that oolite is supposed to be juiced up in terms of visuals, it'd be cool to be able to approximate the original wireframe gaming experience.
On that note, I think it would be cool to add Vectrex style line blurring to simulate the vectorscope look. (oops, can't post link yet)
I think the vectrex look will compliment the low poly models very well.
hidden line removal in wireframe view?

Re: hidden line removal in wireframe view?
Hi, kensuguro, and first of all welcome to the boards, and of course to this great game!
If you're after the pure Elite experience, you should try "Strict mode". It is an option on the F2-screen. In strict mode you get wireframe models only (with hidden-line removal), and Oolite behaves as closely to original Elite as possible. Note that OXPs are de-activated in strict mode. It is only "vanilla" Elite.kensuguro wrote:I was trying to get into the whole wireframe mode, "fill in the polys with my imagination" style of gaming.. but it seems oolite doesn't do hidden line removal.. which I believe the original Elite does.

Are you sure about that, McLane... it's not how my 'strict mode' appears.Commander McLane wrote:If you're after the pure Elite experience, you should try "Strict mode". It is an option on the F2-screen. In strict mode you get wireframe models only (with hidden-line removal),
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Yep, hidden line removal in our dodgy 'wireframe' mode doesn't apply to planets, and it gets confused the moment you add subentities to the model.
I believe the plan was to leave it enabled for test releases, and if no progress was made on it when stable is otherwise ready, disable it.
I think A_C will have more info on the matter though!

Ahh… strict mode and wireframe mode together… I see what you mean.
I just took Oolite out and had a look… rather good, actually… brings back the memories.
Oh... and welcome, kensuguro.
