Hi Everyone!

Post by DrPrunesquallor »

Hello,

I'm pretty new to oolite, having only just racked up my 67th Kill - go me!

Firstly, I'd just like to say a HUGE thank-you to everyone involved with OOlite and the OXPs. It's an awesome achievement, and very much appreciated.

Now, for a couple of questions:

1) Is there an OXP which has a bundle of playable ships in? And if not, please can some rcommend some good ones?
2) How does one "get rich quick"? After several hours of play-time, I've only amassed ~60K. Not enough for an "iron-ass" badboy like I'm hoping to fly.
3) In the Anarachies OXP, is there a quick way to find your prey when you're looking for bounties?
4) In the "Hoopy Casino" OXP, do the casinos appear in all tech level 11+
systems?

Cheers,

DrP.

Hi, and welcome to the friendliest Board this side of Riedquat!

I can help a bit with a couple of your questions.
For Ships, have a look at the sortable OXP table.
Sort the Ships OXPs (click on any one that says 'Ships' and they'll all be together. Most ship OXPs have a player version, and some will have more than one.
Getting rich is a labour of love, but can be speeded up. Firstly get a cargo bay expansion, then work out where the big profits are...Computers and luxuries to low tech worlds, booze, furs etc to high tech worlds, and use Rock Hermits for Precious stones and metals and Radioactives and Minerals to take to rich industrial worlds. Also think about a ship upgrade to something with a bigger hold than the Cobra. Maybe a Python, then up to a Boa of some sort.
Also consider cargo and passenger contracts. Once you have a good reputation these can be very lucrative.
The other thing is to apply the time-is-money principle. Don't waste time slowly fighting your way from witchpoint to planet. As you exit hyperspace pitch up a few degrees from the W-P line and hit the Torus drive. After a minute or so pitch back down to the planet. You'll avoid the regular spacelanes this way, thus avoiding other ships (no mass-locking, no pirates) and you'll be at the planet in a very short time with no hassle and no expensive missiles to replace or equipment to repair.

Hope this helps.

:)

Hi, Dr P., welcome to the boards! Friendliest this side of Riedquat, and a two-drink minimum ...

1) There are a bunch of ship bundles: your best place to start looking is on the wiki, here. One word of warning, though: many of the bundles contain a few really nasty ships, which can come as a horrible surprise if you're not tooled up for them! The "Old Ships" bundle, for example, contains the Iguana and the Cat, and both are not to be trifled with.

2) Getting rich quick: you can use some shortcuts, like dodging out of the spacelanes. You can dabble in the precious metals and gems markets: there's not much profit on the individual kilos and grammes, but they don't take up cargo space and you can hold on to them and look out for the best margins. You can also take advantage of some of the other trading opportunities available via OXPs. The Convenience Stores, for example, can give you two bites at the trading cherry per system. You should also remember that it's perfectly legal to buy narcotics, firearms and slaves, and ship them in to main stations. Just don't try taking them out of main stations! Slaves are morally wrong, and there's not much margin on them. Firearms are better, but judicious, legal narcotics trading can bring buckets of credits per ton.

You might also consider getting a larger ship, and taking on some cargo hauling missions via the F8-F8 screen. These aren't too great to begin with but if you build a reputation for delivering on time, then the contracts can get really very profitable indeed. If you don't fancy changing ships, then you could flirt with a passenger cabin. Again, the trips aren't hugely profitable to being with, but build a reputation and the sweeter deals will follow.

3) Not sure ... further advice will follow from someone more in the know ...

4) Hoopy casinos should appear in all TL 11+ systems.

Hi Dr P!

Cannot resist promoting my OXPs as an answer to your point 1) ...

Far Arm ships and Z-ships, both add playable ships and the NPCs incorporated are in general around core ships' power range.

Sorry... I can't help it, I've got to...

Hi DrP, welcome. Nothing to see here! (everyone else has it pretty much well covered anyway)

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies, everyone!

I'll watch out for those powerful ships: I just ran into a "rogue frigate" and thought I'd go and investigate (Currently in a Cobra MkIII, without any shield upgrades). I had a short, sharp lesson in the true nature of the force.

I'm not finding Hoopy Casinos in any TechLvl 11+ Systems. I've put the OXP in the addons folder with the other oxps which work fine. I expect I've a) got an older version that doesn't play with the latest, or done my file permissons wrong or summat.

Cheers,

DrP

@Zieman: I'll download your OXPs this evening ;P

'Legal narcotics trading'... tsk, tsk, what is the Ooniverse coming to.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

To take on a rogue frigate you really need military lasers front and rear, and an ECM. Keep your distance: if you let it get close ... well, you'll have found that out already! ;)

The latest version of the Hoopy Casinos OXP is 1.2, and it only works with Oolite 1.74: you can download it from here.

It's barely coming to at all, what with the amounts of (purely medicinal) megaweed everyone is horsing through ...

Ah yes, that 'medicinal' Arcturan Megaweed... a contrabandista's delight.

Not quite sure what you mean. Pirates with bounties are added by vanilla Oolite, without any OXP. Anarchies.oxp doesn't change anything about that. (Not to my knowledge, that is; and I wrote the stuff. )

Generally pirates are more plentyful in low-end political systems (Anarchies and Feudals) than in Corporates and Democracies. And they are out to find you (and any traders) so they simply lurk along the "corridor" between the witchpoint and the planet (and to a somewhat lesser extent in along the other two "corridors" between the witchpoint and the sun, and between the planet and the sun). Fly along the corridor in a reasonably straight line, and they will be there.
