New to Oolite
Hi all I am a longtime Elite fan and I have been looking around for sometime for a Elite game for my PC (Vista64) and I came across Oolite.
I was wondering which if any of the add-ons I should use to get the best experience out of the game…. I was going to start with theOolite 1.74.2 and griff_shipset_dizzy_all_in_1.
Can anyone recommend my best plan of attack for my first experience of Oolite.

Hi, and welcome to The Friendliest Board This Side of Riedquat.
Almost every newcomer asks this question, and of course it's a case of what you want. Everyone has their own list of must-have OXPs and I'm sure they'll be happy to share them with you!
Griffs ships are a good start, and if you want to 'pretty-up' everything else you could do worse than my AccessoriesOXP which does the stations and other non-ship objects. Also 'Your Ad Here!' and System Redux or Deep Horizons Systems are excellent eye-candy.
Often the best advice is to go easy on OXPs while you're finding your way around the game, and add them one by one as you find good ones you want.
There is a full list here on the Wiki, which is worth a good look.
Happy hunting, and enjoy!

Hi and welcome… you’ll get plenty of advice, I’m sure, so I’ll just mention one oxp that is among my must-haves.
The Background Set gives you really nice screens and ambient sounds.
As mentioned by Smivs, System Redux gives you beautiful planets and moons.

I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

VelcOOme.
It's always nice to fill out the Ooniverse a bit, with the political OXP's:
Commies
Feudal states
anarchies
dictators
and BGS (background set) is great for atmosphere.
Don't worry too much about having too many oxp's. it's amazing how many you can have.
If your frame rate drops, it's normally down to one or two particular OXP's, not because you have too many.

Pretty space and planets and pretty ships are some of my usual "must haves".
The "Lights Down" OXP looks great with System Redux, in my opinion.
I also usually like the political systems OXPs, but be aware that the Anarchies OXP will also make it harder to keep a "clean" rating, if that's something you prefer. It also adds a way to "clean up" your legal rating, but it's an expense and hassle you might want to think twice about adding early on. A bit later though, it adds a lot of really fun stuff.

I would strongly suggest playing it 'vanilla' and seeing what changes you think would be nice.
More ships are generally nice, and most do not change gameplay, but a few are much too powerful for a beginner. Rattlecutter Im looking at you. Many missions are not applicable in the early stages of the game.
And of course, as an elite fan, it makes sense to start with a game most elite-like.

As someone else who was a Elite fan, and is now playing Oolite, I agree with Cmdr. James. There are SO many cool OXps for Oolite, it's easy to get carried away and miss the actual game play.I would strongly suggest playing it 'vanilla' and seeing what changes you think would be nice.
Personally, I started with Neolite's ships to add a bit of spice, and System Redux 2 for some planetary eye candy. Neither of these OXps effect game play.
Cheers.

If you like Griff’s shipset, and you’re flying a Griff Cobra Mk III, the Griff multi-decal player Cobra Mk III is a very cool alternative.
As with the shipset, you can customise the paintjob, plus add up to four decals of your own design (or choosing).
You should also add Griff’s rock hermit, which is not included in the all-in-one oxp, and can be found about halfway down the list here. There are two versions… a full size texture and a half size texture, as it has been known to slow some peoples machines down.
Good hunting, commander!
