Other Space sims
Just curious what other space sims you guys have enjoyed and played ..or recommend?. Im having great fun on oolite right now, but do play a few other games.
For me, i know its linear but i got quite into wing commander.
Remember loving privateer
Thought I-War 2 was good and played a fair bit though it was actually linear too.
Enjoyed freelancer (multiplayer) for a while.
But, for pure combat rushes i adored freespace 2, the huge scale battles with capital ships blasting away etc used to really give a rush.

Wing Commander was good fun, and TIE Fighter was a hoot. And, although not first-person 3D, Ambrosia's Escape Velocity games kept me going through the long dark years before Oolite! Again, not a FP3D game, but Digital Eel's Weird Worlds is a fun little timewaster, too (although it's a shame there aren't more and better mods for it).

I preferred part III of the wing commander series. There was something about women flirting throughout and finally throwing themselves at me that appealed.
Outside of that X-Wing and Tie-fighter were good. I still play any version of Galaxians that shows up. I've got a copy of Privateer, but never really got into it. It's still in my drawer awaiting time to try it out properly - read unlikely to happen!
Cheers,
Drew.

I cant remember each individual episode names now..but i remember one episode of wing commander was interspersed with FMV?.. and they had even hired luke skywalker to play the commander
My nephew hated that aspect, but i liked it

Freespace 2 was one of my favs. I nearly got involved with development on that at some point, but I found Oolite shortly after.
Other sims I really enjoyed and remember vividly even up to now were Wing Commander (esp. The Price of Freedom, with Mark Hammill and Malcolm McDowell in the cast) and Privateer. Ahh, good times.

Speaking of FreeSpace2, I played a demo(?) of Beyond the Red Line, which is a sort of combat space simulator (I want to say loosely based on Battlestar Galactica the newer TV series). I gather it is based on the FreeSpace2 game. I'm not really up on all the folklore and stuff but the game was pretty hardcore (those days of ignoring the manual and getting straight into the game are behind us). I did a quick search on the net and it seems to have spun off into two factions, but there's no sign of a real game yet.
I don't really know of many other games other than what have already been mentioned and I didn't really play those.
Not really games as such but Celestia (3D educational Space simulator) and Stellarium (3D Astronomy tool) are both pretty cool, Space-related products (and Open Source!).

Favourite Space Sims:
3D Star Strike (Spectrum 48K - not mine)

FOFT (Federation of Free Traders - Amiga [came with its own built in programming language!]
X-wing v Tie Fighter (DOS PC)
Freelancer
Freespace 2

I'd forgotten about 3d starstrike. That was excellent.
Anyone remember Code Name Mat 1 and 2 on the humble speccie? Rose tinted remembrance seems to give them a whiff of excellence.
Not quite a space sim, but the RTS Battlezone occupied for a long while, as did the Homeworld series. Still play them sometimes.
Cheers,
Drew.
