Lets buy Ian Bell a plasma globe for Christmas!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/registry/1IU ... /ref=elite
It would appear Ian wants a plasma globe. And I thought what better way to introduce ourselves. To be fair I'll probably end up stumping up the cash for this, that said if anyone want to throw a couple of quid my way then that would be cool.
I jest. I'm getting it. I can run to 21 quid but I'll be darned if I'm stumping up the ton for "Handbook of Exact Solutions for Ordinary Differential Equations" Nothing personal Ian I'm not made of money. So yes a plasma globe because it's cool and we owe him for being very Buddhist about the entire Elite thing. Of course if you want to put your name on the card then your more than welcome.
UPDATE!
Well it looks like one or two people want to contribute:

OK I'll be editing this first post so I can keep track of people. I will do my best to keep this updated as quickly as possible. (I know it's a cash thing and around such things people expect immediate results and changes).
[REMEMBER TO REFRESH]
Total kitty: 110 Quid; all confirmed. Pay pal transfer cut so far: £5.31
:£94.69 to spend.
Currently we could buy the plasma and both origami books with change left over (I do have to say you've made me humble, I do love this forum! )

Wow, there are items on his wish list dating back to 2003. Either nobody sends him stuff from the list, or he keeps adding to it regularly.
Anyway, I'm all for shortening it. Where do I send the dough?

I met him at the Elite gathering last year and he was getting stuck in to the origami Elite ships. Maybe we should get him the Advanced Origami book too

OK we can play this one of 2 ways;
1) we faf around with a paypal tips jar
2) pick something cheap off the list and just amazon it for him! (then co-ordinate with the others for a generic oolite Chrimbo greeting)
Not sure which is the best alternative but I'm seeing a fair bit of modest 4-10 quid stuff on here.
The advantages of clubbing together is we might tot up a total worthy of that £100 stats nasty he's had his eye on. I'm going to see if there are any downsides to a paypal donate button.

I’d be wary of items that have been on a wish list for over three and a half years.
They might well have been acquired elsewhere in that time, and not been deleted from the list.

I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Perhaps we could ask him about the older items? For a start I'd say that somebody who regularly (well, twice a year is kind of regular as well ) puts new items on the list could be expected to strike out items which are no longer needed.
Personally I am all for Gesualdo (obviously the 2003 wish wasn't fulfilled by anybody, so he tried it again in 2008; or he may want to compare the different recordings?) from the Tallis Scholars (although there is a benchmark recording by the Hilliard Ensemble as well, but debating our personal preferences in performing styles of old music would perhaps lead a little too far here ).
Oh, and everybody (well, at least everybody interested in physics) should own (and enjoy) the Feynman Lectures.
My main problem with PayPal is that I can't access my account anymore since the email address I was registering with is defunct. And they haven't really been helpful in solving this problem yet (lots and lots of over-complicated bureaucracy). So I basically had to opt for not using them anymore.
But apart from this technical difficulty, count me in.

Apart from forever being in their databases? Not too many!;)ClymAngus wrote:The advantages of clubbing together is we might tot up a total worthy of that £100 stats nasty he's had his eye on. I'm going to see if there are any downsides to a paypal donate button.
Still, count me in for a tenner!
