I read the book about half a decade ago after the author placed a copy in my hand. Since I know the guy, I'm probably not the best person to offer an unbiased opinion on the work. However, if you are still curious, send me a PM.

The title surprised me… it’s a form of Chaturanga, an ancient Indian board game, thought to be the forerunner of chess.

Actually, it's just occurred to me that the name of that spaceship is actually "Serenity" ... I take it it's not the album of that name by Culture Beat then?

Just seen your edit CR... Rolling Thunder is a fine ship, and a great album by Mickey Hart... not the answer, though.

The album is earlier than the novel that the ship appears in… I suspect that the author may have liked this band.

The album cover features a spaceship, and the novel (in which the starship is one of the main settings) is high class space opera.

I cracked, and resorted to Wikipedia ... it's Clear Air Turbulence by the Ian Gillan Band. The CAT is of course a ship from Consider Phlebas by Iain Banks, who is known for playing games in his books with music trivia ...
