If you install Commies! OXP, they have their own semi-random billboards (and there seems to be a few) instead of standard nav buoys.
True. Just no billboards floating along the main route that constantly remind me of what a great system with what a magnificent leadership I'm in
I'm reminded the Red Dwarf episode "Back to Reality":
"Vote Fascist for a Third Glorious Decade of Total Law Enforcement"
"Be a Government Informer. Betray Your Family & Friends. Fabulous Prizes to be Won"
Trying to find a suitable screencap so that I can create posters for communist billboards...
Also, the Geisha / "move off-world" adverts from the airships in BladeRunner. A spoof/ blatant rip-off of one of those would be beautiful.
There was an OXP made a-couple-or-six months ago that had at least one ship like that in it. The name escapes me at the moment, though.
(A quick peek at the wonderful new sortable OXP list has failed to jog my memory, and I cannot be bothered with a proper search atm.)
"Actually this is a common misconception... I do *not* in fact have a lot of time on my hands at all! I just have a very very very very bad sense of priorities."

That's the one.
(I only clicked on the 4 ships listed, not the parent OXP, thus missing the billboard version of the Super Bulk Hauler.)

Seeing those adverts on the side of the ship like that...
How about an OXP that lets the player mount billboards on the side of his ship, and then get paid for displaying adverts?
- You have to buy the billboard mounting kits yourself. They each take up a side gun slot, meaning you can't mount weapons there.
- They reduce your maneuverability a bit, and suck up a little energy.
- Bigger ships= bigger, more expensive, billboards, but a better "range".
- Billboards are very vulnerable to weapons fire.
- Once you have yur billboards fitted, you enter into a contract with an advertising supplier, which works kind of like web-advertising (goooogle?) - they will pay you a fraction of a credit every time you pass within X kilometres of another ship / station with your ads switched on. (Where X increases with the size of your billboard)
- Increasing your rating increases your negotiating power, leading to higher revenues.
- Breaking the law may lose you your contract, or they may demand payment from you due to some kind of penalty clause.
- Corporate advertising in communist systems might not be welcome. Likewise communist propoganda in corporate systems.
- You can get better rates by dealing direct with certain companies (ie Tescoo) and displaying their ads exclusively. Of course then you won't be welcome in competing stores.
- If you don't fancy the billboards, you could just get your ship painted in corporate colours (of course this would be a hell of a job for someone to create all the possible skins)
It seems quite possible to me: from 1.74.x you can dynamically change materials & shaders for any ship using javascript, including the player's.
Technically, that's all you need to apply new decals and/or shader based billboards to any ship, depending on the value of a mission variable, or whatever else you can think of...
Edit: sure, you can't buy a billboard subentity for your existing ship & bolt it to the outside, but there's noting to stop you from using the flat parts of your ship for advertising purposes, or maybe even buy a custom made billboard ship...
