Fire a missile, Lose target?!

Post by Switeck »

Is my version of Oolite bugged, or is this standard behavior?
(Windows Oolite v1.74.2)

I'd prefer to track the enemy ship to its destruction but it seems I lose target when I fire a missile at it.

Yeah, this is the behaviour inherited from Elite.

Handwavium suggests that this is because the targeting system is part of the missile rather than the rather crude onboard computer.

It's not so different from real life, something like the AMRAAM has a much better tracking sensitivity and FOV than the onboard aircraft systems, and therefore the missile is active and tracking on the pylon while the aircraft is in flight.

I am aware of USA's A-10's carrying both IR and visible light versions of Maverick missiles and using their guidance systems to help fly the plane in poor light conditions.

With the multi-target equipment added to my ship, I can at least recover the previous target/s using +/- ...but this is a dangerous chore in combat when retaining current target could easily be done.
...Maybe at the cost of additional equipment?

I find this behaviour annoying too, sometimes. But I have learned to live with it.
