Pioneer
Last week playing Pioneer. A FFE clone but MUCH better.
Yes physics are Newtonian but when you learn flying the exploring is so fantastic. The very very high detail settings renders the planets in fantastic landscapes and there is much variation.
A S D WQ E steering
ENTER: FWd thrust
SHIFT= Retro thrust
This is what I wanted. Now someone combines this with Oolite combat. And we have the perfect game

Wow, that looks great! It's mad to think that graphics like the Star Trek II Genesis device sequence

I've been having a play around with the Alpha 3 version this morning, trying to get to grips with the autopilot. Think I've got the hang of it now, although the game crashed out to desktop when I tried to restore a saved game
Very promising though.

The save game thing is indeed annoying. I saved at a spectacular location but couldn't reload it in a later session.Steve wrote:I've been having a play around with the Alpha 3 version this morning, trying to get to grips with the autopilot. View from a world orbiting a Blue giant of 13.29 solar masses. Orbiting Gas Giant Daex D at 27 AU from the star. And it still is enormous.

I've given it a try. I haven't hit a point where I'd want to try and save yet, so I don't know if that crashes it on the system. My problem has been more a matter of crashing the ship, the game itself hasn't crashed (yet). LOL
A tutorial or a manual explaining what order to do the steps in and maybe a basic key-chart would be nice. I haven't figured out yet if I can get it to work with a joystick instead of keyboard keys. The procedures and keys are probably something obvious to people who played the game(s) that inspired it, maybe..
Pioneer is amazing with some of it's scenery and just the feel of flying around a planet over cities and etc and then turning your nose to space and heading out. Impressive, and the physics feel more like a flight sim than most space sims/games in some ways.
It looks like it's shaping up to be a good game. For me personally, I doubt it'll ever take the place of Oolite, any more than Oolite takes the place of Vega Strike. Just like space sim games don't take the place of the flight sims I play. It all depends on what one is in the mood for.
Oolite holds the undisputed lead in one area, though. The OXPs. Oolite's community constantly developing new tricks and ships and flavours and eye candy and missions and so on makes it very unlikely one could get bored with it. Just when you think you've got all the OXPs you might want, somebody comes up with something new that's astounding and you're off again.

Perhaps, given the Jupiter-like Gas Giant icons for most of the other planets in the system, this one is a Brown Dwarf? Thus it has planets orbiting it (still) and those planets have moons? Or it could just be a badly designed system generator...
