[Solved] Fedora 13 - v1.74.1 crashes on splash screen

Post by Smivs »

Hi,
I've just had a call for help from a friend who has just installed v1.74.1 and it's crashing on the splash screen.
His email:-

I'm on Fedora 13 64 bit. I installed oolite-1.74.1-test.x86_64.package
I suspect there's a debug mode I might need to run

Does anyone have any ideas?

Smivs... there's something about adding a -nosplash switch to the start line, that sometimes works.
I can't remember the details... try a search for nosplash.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

If that doesn't help, it could have something to do with the sound drivers: he might need to install pulseaudio.

A little while ago Getafix was working on an alternative to installing pulseaudio, so maybe I'm totally wrong here, though!

Thanks, I'll pass that on, although I know my friend John views PulseAudio as some sort of abomination. Incidentally I run Ubuntu and have uninstalled PulseAudio, and 1.74.1. works fine for me.

Don't go installing PulseAudio.

Rename the
[/usr or ~/.local]/lib/Oolite/oolite-deps/lib/libespeak.so.1
to
[/usr or ~/.local]/lib/Oolite/oolite-deps/lib/libespeak.so.1.oolite

This should force the usage of the system's libespeak.
If the system libespeak library is not there(1), install it by Fedora's repositories.

(1)Running oolite from terminal will pop-up a message in case a library is missing.

EDIT: @Smivs - I've PMed you a test package which should resolve this. Could you give it a try before I go public with that?

I passed this on to my friend John, and the good news is...It Worked :D
He has now got Oolite v1.74 working on the Linux box.
Many thanks to everyone involved for the help and advice.

Great news, Smivs!

The same solution has been applied in 1.74.2, released a couple of days ago.
I strongly suggest to install that one, since it also contains fixes not included in the test-package I sent you. :!:

Mission accomplished. Next please!?! :)
