A break from the norm...

Post by DaddyHoggy »

My work lab, after many years deliberately maintaining a mixture of ATI, NV cards with some historical 3DFX and Matrox cards thrown in for comparative teaching purposes last year cleaned out and went completely nVidia, replacing our ageing X800s with shiny GTX285s and thus our 100+ PCs gfx cars ranged from 640MB 8800GTS -> 1GB GTX285s with the most common card actually being 768MB 8800GTXs - meaning that most of the time all of our apps looked the same and behaved as they should or at least all consistently behaved incorrectly when they did misbehave.

Well, I could resist no longer - on our big 4 screen simulator the 1GB GTX260s just couldn't render out to a range that was believable for helos and having looked at the price/performance of GTX480s we then went out and bought a stack of ATI HD 2GB XFX Black Edition 5970s - I'm sure nVidia will leap frog ATI again at some point, but I'm stunned at the current gap at the top end of gfx cards - if you've got £500 to spend - ATI have blown nVidia out of the water!
