Then – like maik said – don't install OXPs you don't like. Or make your own skin set to suit your own preferences, and upload it for other people who might feel the same way. That's the beauty of OXPs: they're not compulsory, and they're surprisingly easy to make and edit any way you like. They are also free from any form of central control ... it's an Anarchy out here!silly_sad wrote:I think what i said before.

I don't understand why you are so excitable. Can you please give us your point of view in a little more detail? This will certainly help resolve any possible misunderstandings. The people who responded to you said nothing out of the ordinary and in a civil way, too.silly_sad wrote:I am shocked with the depth of misunderstanding.

Then, as everybody else seems to have misunderstood, why not try and explain your aversions to improved texturing a little better - looking at the results of the poll, indicates that generally Oolite players (who have taken the trouble to vote and therefore care one way or another) - would like "better" graphics, all we are discussing now is at what level that improvement should be pitched at.silly_sad wrote:

As for your response to me in the earlier posting - I'm just suggesting that you qualify "realistic" - since nothing in Oolite is realistic - pan-Galactic space travel, 30km wide planets, etc. Some players think chunky industrial hull plating type textures are realistic, others, super smooth and shiny - so don't care (like me) as long as it looks good, feels "right" and doesn't affect my fps too much I really don't care...
EDIT: Ninja'd by a very sensible and pragmatic response by A_C (although I heartily agree with everything he said!)

you talk about misunderstanding, mebbes you're misunderstanding the concept of a poll. it doesn't mean that everything you say should be taken on board and actioned immediately.
silly_sad, I don't know why you're upset by the answers you got here either. The poll was started because someone wanted 'prettier' graphics than the standard ones, to sum what others have already said in answer to your 4 points:
2) again, there's no real need to add a lot of OXPs, most people decide on how many OXPs are just right for their system & tastes.
3) sure. If you install an oxp with 'improved' skins, it might well look 'wrong'. Possibly just as wrong going to some parts of this planet where you can see donkeys & Ferraris on the same stretch of road, but wrong nonetheless.
4) Nothing against Elite culture here! Still, there are quite a few things in Oolite that are not considered Elite, but a lot of people find they're really good extensions of the game anyway.
If there's a specific OXP you would like to use, but somehow uses 'wrong' textures & models, the best thing to do is to ask the oxp maker to create a version that uses the standard Oolite ships instead. Or you could even tweak the offending OXP(s) yourself, and maybe offer the results to the community at large!
The whole concept of OXPs is that they're optional, so no-one here is trying to force you to use OXPs you don't like!
PS: the poll was opened by Commander Learner, who actually likes the extra eye candy and wasn't aware that he could get it by using the OXPs mentioned by Thargoid.
Any bb member - including you - can create a poll, on any (civilised) subject they like!
1) fair enough: if you don't install the oxps that add the 'realistic' skins, you won't get realistic skins.silly_sad wrote:(1) it is not good to mix classic and "realistic" skins.
(2) the oolite with a lot of OXPs installed ALREADY too slow.
(3) "realistic" skins are... far away from the entire game schematic. it is like a one leg longer than the rest.
(4) "Elite" culture.
I vote for rollback to plain skins.
OR
_moderate_ upgrade of _ALL_ existing ships in the ooneverse (not adding too much visual garbage).

I only ANSWERED the poll question and explain my answer a bit (thinking the poll is opened for me to answer as well)Kaks wrote:PS: the poll was opened by Commander Learner, who wanted the extra eye candy and wasn't aware that he could get it by using the OXPs mentioned by Thargoid.

If they feel so insulted as a stranger was dare to answer their private poll. i quit, apologize, and cancel my vote.

There are no private polls on this forum. Again, it is you who seems to have jumped to the wrong conclusion. Unless you're a professional troll, I suspect that the friendliest board this side of Riedquat is not for you...silly_sad wrote:I only ANSWERED the poll question and explain my answer a bit (thinking the poll is opened for me to answer as well)Kaks wrote:PS: the poll was opened by Commander Learner, who wanted the extra eye candy and wasn't aware that he could get it by using the OXPs mentioned by Thargoid.

Ok, the misunderstanding here is that we thought you were asking us to do something, instead of just answering stuff!
That 'I vote for rollback to plain skins. ' thing was probably the main source of the confusion, the plain skins are there, and are the only skins available in Oolite, unless you go to the effort of finding the extra OXPs...
Does it mean you want us to find textures oxps, download them, then delete them from our hard disk?
From my point of view, it does feel like most people tried to say you don't need to do anything to 'roll back' to the situation you want!
Adding an OXP is always a bit of a voyage in the unknown as far as I'm concerned, and it's never something I do too lightly myself!
By the way, '_moderate_ upgrade of _ALL_ existing ships in the ooneverse' sounds interesting, and maybe it's something that we could talk about - at length, even - after we release the next stable version of Oolite...
In any case, let's do remember we're the friendliest forum this side of Riedquat! Apologies all round, we now know that no offence was meant by anyone!

First i thought, u r intended to elaborate some kind of unification of textures or such. Why not?Kaks wrote:Does it mean you want us to find textures oxps, download them, then delete them from our hard disk?
If someone asked a really HARD question, i presume he has a power to analyze answers and to elaborate a solution... I do not know if i was wrong about this, but i was certainly wrong about posting here at all.
...since so few completely polite words could shake the hive.
Why so hostile stance right from the beginning?
And where are the polite words...?

Yowser! I will ask this question as carefully and as politely as the medium of a forum posting allows for: Can I presume that English is not your first language? I ask because your questions and your responses come across somewhat extreme and I am wondering whether it is simply a language barrier problem or whether you really have taken offence at every response of ours so far offered.silly_sad wrote:I do not know if i was wrong about this, but i was certainly wrong about posting here at all.

If you like your Oolite to look and feel like Elite (not really like Elite because graphics are solid rather than wireframe) then play in strict mode (and you could even switch to wireframe mode), or do not install any oxps that alter the texturing of any object in the game, or introduce new ships with a higher polygon count and/or new textures, or any oxp that adds new objects to the game as these will invariable be "improvements" on the basic game texturing and object style.
Oolite is single player. You play in your Ooniverse, it can look and feel however you want it to, within the limitations of the game engine and current OXPs.
Several discussions related to this one have considered the option of making Oolite "better" (Oolite != Elite) and thus have an improved default set of models (Deepspace - non-shadered good for old machines, Neolite - "nicer" to look at than the classic shapes but still the ships are very identifiable, look good even without shaders, or Griff's which are amazing to look at but need shaders to look their best) - of course that leads to the difficulty of only having the original "classic" shapes in strict mode or make the original ships/shapes an OXP that puts them back over the top of the (possible) new default ships.
I was always under the impression that this poll was simply trying to ascertain how far people thought the graphics should be pushed over its current capabilities (i.e. beyond (for example) what Griff has managed to do with the game engine already).
If 1000 people had voted and 995 of them had ticked the "could be improved" box then at least the developers would be aware of the strong feeling in this area, BUT, as this is a voluntary development, in both coding and OXPing, there's every chance that nothing would come of it...

This thread has been quiet for a bit, but I feel that the topic is important enough to chime in on.
I voted that the graphics are good enough. Not to say further improvements wouldn't be welcome, but they are good enough to support some pretty amazing OXP ships and scenery. Considering the variety of machines people play Oolite on, being able to pick and choose the level and elements of eye candy you want is just a brilliant idea.
I vote that the graphics are good enough, mostly because they're functional enough to give reasonable immersion (depending on the player's machine) while managing fast and fluid gameplay. There is nothing "broken" about them, so they wouldn't be what I would think should be the main focus of game development at this time.
To be entirely honest, Oolite has enough going for it that it's hard to say where the main focus for development should be. The coding is tight, compact and tidy. There's an active community with people writing fiction and coming up with new OXPs. Some of the OXPs are utterly brilliant, extending the game in great ways for those who might want some specific capabilities. In old Elite, you could imagine a planetfall, but it wasn't in the game's capability, for one example. Plenty of ship, weapon, scanner and mission additions for those who want them.
Anyway, I digress from the point of the poll. I don't feel that the current graphics quality hampers the game. On the whole, the game is pretty dang impressive.
