1.74: first keypress doesn't do anything

Post by Commander McLane »

When I start a new game and want to either switch to another screen or launch, I have to press the corresponding key twice. It seems that the first keypress, whatever key it is, isn't recognized at all. Afterwards, everything is fine.

Yes, I've noticed that too. I have to press F1 a couple of times to launch.

It seems I cannot replicate the case.

Could you post the steps to replicate it,
starting from the opening "load previous commander" screen?

I cannot reproduce on Windows either. What I do note though is this: Sometimes, the game is accessing intensively the hard disk for a couple of seconds immediately after loading a game and all input is halted during that time. Pressing launch during this period will yield no response. Note that this happens only occasionally though and I consider it a result of loading large amounts of data in memory, ending in disk swapping. The more OXPs you have installed, the more noticeable it is. It has been also like this for many of the past versions.

As far as I know this is intentionally and introduced half a year ago in the code. When I remember well it was Kaks who changed this for some reason to prevent an other problem.
But reading the reactions, it only happens on the mac? I grew accustomed to this behaviour of the missing first keystroke after a restart by now.

Well, it all happened when I added paging of equipment in the status screen.

We seem to be stuck between either displaying the second page of equipment carried on board, or needing one extra keystroke on load / game startup... not 100% ideal, I agree, but hopefully something we'll be able to puzzle out in due course!

PS: the present GUI code is horribly, horribly complicated, and needlessly so. It's also horribly, horribly fragile. Immediately after we get the fabled NSR, I've got every intention of removing that part of the code, & replacing it with something at least a bit more sane...
Hey, free OXPs: farsun v1.05 & tty v0.5! :0)

No. I'm using Windows Vista.

On my linux system the only thing I notice is that key presses take a fraction of a second longer to register, e.g. I can't just jab a key to make it work, it has to be a definite press.
