Graphics glitches on 1.74

Post by JazHaz »

Just been playing a session with 1.74. Very nice! Screen updates seem a lot smoother than under 1.73.4.

I have some glitches to report though. Not sure if they are all bugs or not though, or just because my computer is non-shader (Open-GL v1.5).

Click on the images to view in Flickr.
Image
This first image is with Detailed Planets turned on, and Reduced Detail switched off. There doesn't seem to be any detail to the planet?

Also, didn't take a screenshot of it, but I can if you want, when I am close to the planet, I get "smudges" when the planet goes off the edges of my screen.

Image
This second image is when I was approaching the sun. Suddenly the sun went black. This is actually an improvement over 1.73.4 where it would suddenly disappear altogether! At least now I can see where it is with the corona visible. But its still not right. In 1.73.4 the planets also used to go black when I got close to them, but this seems to have been fixed in 1.74.

Image
The third image, I have discovered is a problem with System Redux OXP. EDIT: It's actually caused by Orbits.

I previously reported this issue with 1.74 trunk, but it seems to have continued with 1.74 test. The image shows a planet from Witchpoint distance, in fact I think the Witchpoint is on the scanner. Removing System Redux has solved the issue, but I want my lovely planets back please!! :(

JazHaz, it'd be great if you can tell us how to reliably reproduce those glitches, that way we can have a better chance of removing those bugs!

About the black sun, that's a pretty cool effect! I want! :D
Hey, free OXPs: farsun v1.05 & tty v0.5! :0)

Thats tough to say really. I've only played two sessions with 1.74. But I suspect a lot of it is down to the fact that I've not got shaders available.

Can you perhaps try switching shaders off and then seeing if you can reproduce them?

I was thinking he had fitted a very good auto-filtering system on his optics!

While I like completely unmotivated guessing as much as the next guy, I do test with shaders disabled, quite a lot. It’s supposed to work, and for most people it seems it does.

Have been through my log but there are no obvious errors that might explain these glitches.

EDIT: is there anything I can switch on in logcontrol.plist that might help to narrow them down?

Graphics drivers is my guess, especially if you had such problems also with 1.73.4. Can you please post a log where the renderer version and extensions list is shown?

However in 1.73.4 I at least had detailed planets, with and without System Redux. No longer in 1.74. So its not just down to the card.

EDIT: its not a particularly good example image, but here is a screenshot from 1.73.4 with a planet with detail showing:

Yeah.

As a Mac user of twenty years, I’m loath to shout “get a real <X>”, but in this case, it’s appropriate. SIS is to OpenGL what a $3 RULOX is to high-quality chronometry.

Unfortunately, due to still not having a job, I'm unlikely to be getting an upgraded PC any time soon.

I appreciate that, but there’s really nothing we can do about it without a similar broken system to test on.

JazHaz, does it display correctly if you take out all OXPs?
