Can't explain Oolite to the wife

Post by masona2 »

Conversation goes as follows.......

Wife = w , Me = m

w - are you on that game again?

m - yeah.

w - you're obsessed with that game.

both now talking - no i'm not. yes you are. no i'm not. yes you are. no i'm not. yes you are.

w - what is it about that game anyway?

m - look, do you remember i've told you i've gone onto the oolite
blogs to see other 40-odd year old blokes trying to explain to their wives/girlfriends whats so good about this game and failed?

(AND the blogs caused me to have fits of laughter)

w - err, yes.

M - well, i carn't explain it to you either.

w - blank look.

m - its just not a girlie thing.

This all sounds horribly familiar. What is wrong with these women?
You'll have to do what we do, say, sit down together for a cup of tea, and "No Oolite until the big hand gets to six".
Oh, and for heavens' sake don't get the urge to develop any OXPs...my last one nearly ended in Divorce. At least the kids see the funny side.

I'm not commenting, except to say business trips and his 'n' hers timezones do wonders for getting coding done (as does air travel times).

Now look here, I know for a fact that we have at least three female players.

I can’t comment on how girly they are, though.

She Who Must Be Obeyed has a laptop and can farce and tw@t(*1) while watching TV.

I have a desktop in the spare room and cannot "go and play on that damn computer" during the few hours we're not at work and before she goes to bed  (she has a 2-hour train journey to & from work so goes to bed early "on a school night"..)...

You think you have it bad trying to explain why you play the game... just try explaining why you need to go and buy a new laptop to run it onas well!

(*1) as in, Farcebook and Twatter, or something...
You really want to know what's gonna happen, Ambassador? Boom. Boom boom. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. BOOM!

Wow.

I thought I'd post this topic because, after reflection, I found the conversation amusing.

After reading your replies above, it seems I'm the lucky one!

My wife does'nt actually object to me playing the game. And she does'nt stop me playing it either.

She just cannot understand why I play it so much. And, as stated above, I'm not even going to try to explain it. Because I already know I'll fail.

I've just thought of another amusing thing to tell you about.

My wifes sister came to stay for a few days and she clocked me playing the game (err...a lot?).

Sis - don't you mind him being on that?

Wife - no.

S - why?

W - look, i get a quiet life to watch my soaps before i go to bed and he gets a quiet life to play his game.

W - sis, let me give you a gem of a piece of advice......

You can take the man out of the boy, but you'll NEVER take the boy out of the man.

This is the deal I have with my missus. All she was really bothered about was the cost.

So I won out there!

The conversation between my wife and me about Oolite usually goes like this:

w: Are you going to save the ooniverse again, tonight?
m: Yes.
w: Good luck, then. I'll go to bed in the meantime.
m: Good night.

You lucky bugger.

M: Mind if I go on the computer whilst your soaps are on?

W: No, go on. You playing that game again?

M: Might be.

W: Ok then. Have fun.

Yeah. I am a lucky bugger too.

And this conversation occurred following the discovers that my laptop's motherboard was once more losing connection with its power coupler...

W: You need another laptop then?

M: Uh huh.

W: <thinks> How much will it be?

M: Need a decent GFX card for 3D stuff and a couple of games. Could probably get one for about £400.

W: Can you wait five weeks?

M: Probably, why?

W: let me save up five weeks of pay and you can have one.

M: Cool. I love you.

W: Yes. You do.

:-)

PS: she bought me lego yesterday too...

You see this is why I cash in brownie points like (laptop broken) Leap in the mighty Clym to fix it! Kitchen needs cleaning Leap in the mighty Clym to fix it!

Clym wants to goof off to oolite for an hour or two, in leaps the mighty Val to let it happen!

Relationships, it's a give and take thing.

In all seriousness though it is about relativity, what does she enjoy that you quite frankly can't understand? From there parallels can be drawn developing a sense of understanding. So what are we talking here? Shoes, cloths? I'm confident I can apply most indulgences to Oolite and capture a comparable je ne sais quois.

Excellent!

Glad to see posts where both people in a relationship have an good understanding of one another.

Please note : I'm talking here as a family man. Kids and all.

Family IS important. We all dedicate a lot of time to our families and rightly so.

But hey! We all need are personal space, no matter what is is.

My wife chills out by watches her soaps. I chill out by playing Oolite.

Err...chill out, get annoyed/frustrated/excited/hooked and I enjoy!

Thank you to all those responsible for this gem of a game.

Having only gotten properly into Oolite fairly recently, my previous Elite discussions with my wife have been to explain the threat that the Thargoids pose.

She says she feels reassured that I'm dealing with the problem.

:?

:x

Is she humouring me?
