Right, but its still a fair question to ask why change wing layout in space. It would seem more sensible for there to be one or more atmospheric configurations, and one for space (air intakes closed etc.).

I was trying to show that there are valid reasons for more than one.

it was entirely valid, and you brought up the answer i would've given myself : that it can reduce the target size somewhat.
