Wikipedia has just launched a new facility for creating books out of articles. You have to be a regular contributor (10 articles or more) to save the formatted book to Wikipedia.
I mention it because I tried it out with Elite articles but couldn't save it. I therefore put it in my Dropbox account for you to download if you want to!

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

that's not right, i'm sure. far as i can recall on my Electron, it had Thargoids but only about 4 other types of ship, Cobra 3, Mamba, Viper and Sidewinder for def, not sure about the others.
As for Thargoids, I always assumed they were in the Electron version because they're so integral to the game. But having gone through the packaging which came with Electron Elite, I can find no mention of the Thargoids anywhere. Not in the manual, or the ship ID chart or the poster.
I can emulate the game with ElectrEm but I don't know how to force a mis-jump in that version to find 'em.
So at the moment, I would have to say the Thargoids weren't in Electron Elite
