VideoLAN acquired by RealNetworks
2010-04-01
VideoLAN is proud to announce that it has been acquired by RealNetworks, the world's premiere provider of Internet media delivery tools. RealNetworks will be working with VideoLAN over the next few months to leverage the powerful Real toolset to improve VLC media player and other VideoLAN software. Accordingly, with the introduction of Real's superior solutions, we will be dropping all other encoders from the streaming component of VLC media player. Additionally, to better serve our customers, we will be introducing a new VLC media player Pro application, with cutting edge streaming capabilities and the ability to play back and edit all Real video and audio formats. This new application will be available for the low low price of $30/€30. We hope you enjoy the new VLC media player!

The end of an era - I certainly will never be upgrading it again - I hate Real with a passion...

I've since had that thought myself - but would they be allowed to Real's name in vain?another_commander wrote:How can it be? I would expect to read something like this only on April 1st, or something. Oh wait...

Given the date of the announcement, I'd take this with a bucket of salt..
(I was almost fooled by mintywhite.com's announcement that they'd been acquired by Microsoft, until I saw it was April 1st)

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied
